Advice on Hks 272/280 cam set up

I was just trying to get some people's thoughts on trying a 272/280 cam setup. Just figured the the 272 intake would help with the idle issue and still be able to get full advantage of the 280 exhaust cam. Post your ideas and thoughts towards this issue.

Don't take my word for it but i know there are a couple guys on this board who have this setup and absolutely love it, though a simple tune and some camgears can make 280's runnable as well, and your car will haul.

how do your 280's idle? I like to know more about 272/280's. I would hate to put cams in and not benefit from all their potential.

Pruven has the HKS 280 intake and JUN 272 exhaust. Maybe you should contact them and get their view on it.

^ I don't see that setup as being very streetable, hampering the exaust side compared to a more high flowing intake side would create a horrible overlap unless tuned and camgears used to maximize the efficency of that setup. I myself do not have cams yet on my car, but my buddy from socalevo.net has 280 exhaust/intake cams with just a safc tune, bigger injectors and some other exhaust components, and I'd say it is definitely not much worse than the stright 272/272 setup but it definitely pulls harder. But if you are not planning on tuning right away for this setup then it will probably not be very enjoyable until you tune for it, though that goes for any cam setup. To really get the full effect of the 280's though, you will need upgraded injectors, fuel pump and other various mods to support all the extra air you're letting into the cylinders, espically at high RPM. In other words, I don't really see an advantage to getting the staggered setup over the stright 280 setup, as it is not that bad with a few mods to maximize efficency.

I run 280's with no cam gears and just a UTEC for engine management. The car runs fine and the idle is just a little lopey. It has never stalled and I run it this with the AC most of the time. Just make sure to raise the idle to around 900-1000 and you would be fine. BTW I love my 280's

I thought the factory cams were larger on the intake side anyways. It would make more sense to me to flow more on the exhaust since you are compressing air into the cylinder then the explosion will cause another expansion of the gasses.

Anyone else agree??

^ Yes, somewhat, we see so many running the staggered setup of 264intake/272exhaust, and this is why the question has been sprung about a possible 272/280 setup for a better idle/ more exhaust flow than a stright 272 setup. The overlap of the cams occurs for a longer period of time with the more agressive cam setups, which causes the lumpy idle that everyone is trying to avoid but camgears can fix the problem in a matter of two minutes, just put 1 or 2 negative degrees on the intake cam and see how it feels, you won't be dissapoointed. In my opinion if you are gonna spend 600 on cams, why not get the best you can get if they are the same price? Sure in the end you will spend more with the camgears, but you will have a better performing product, stright through 280's are the way to go if you plan on getting tuned, having all the basic fuel modifications, exhaust components, there's no better choice, the idle isn't as bad as people make it sound at all as long as it is supported with the right modifications needed to maximize the larger cam profile's potential. Only reason I haven't gotten my cams yet is I'm saving up money right now for a KILLER deal on getting some serious work on my cars head. I'm talking overboring valves, port and polish both intake and exhaust, valves, springs, retainers, pretty much everything. all for a price I can't pass up at my buddie's shop out here in simi, so I'm gonna wait to get the cams and have them throw them in there while they have the rest of the head apart.
