Apex'i Active Tail Silencer (ATS)

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with this? I saw it in Modified Mag this month and thought it might be a good option for those of us that want to reduce sound on the street without sacrificing the amount of power lost with a standard silencer. There's a little blurb about it on the Apex'i website: http://www.apexi-usa.com/news_article.asp?id=4 . It looks like it has a valve that opens up at higher RPM but closes at lower RPM, keeping idle and cruise noises down but restricting flow less at higher RPM. Anyone have any thoughts?

OT, but you could just add a straight through resonator, and not effect air flow/power.

My exhaust already has a straight through resonator and is still VERY loud. My main interest in this item is that it reduces sound at cruise and idle while creating only a slight restriction at WOT.

Well, that's what I'm saying... you can always add another.

That would be a nice piece if it works. I agree that any straight thru 3inch silencer does very little to quiet down anything.

bump for more answers, im very interested in this item.

BTW is it possible to put a resonator on a titanium exhaust like the Greddy Ti?

Another mysterious apexi product. You'd think a company might want to include as much information about its product as possible...not apexi.

I was looking into this as well.

It's very spendy, and no one has been able to tell me if it would fit my Helix exhaust... I saw a test in D-Sport awhile back and it made substantially more power than the traditional silencer, but still less than no silencer at all (obviously). Still, it seems like it may be a good trade-off. However, IIRC, it didn't quiet the car down that much at idle, which I thought was surprising. Don't have the mag handy to check though...

Like you, I want it quieter at idle and low rpm part throttle. If I go WOT, it's at my own risk, heh.

I'm either going to hack my Helix and try a larger muffler, possibly with a resonator, or just re-install stock and maybe get a dump valve. Per my dyno testing at Pruven, the Helix with silencer installed loses ~50 WHP on the dyno, so I'm probably better off with the stock exhaust.

If you do get the ATS or get other, please share.

Thanks,

I saw another thread that someone on the forums had fitted the Apexi ATS to an Evo X with the HKS Hi-Power exhaust and was hoping to hear what any other users who have installed this think of it

ps. I know it's an old thread!

bump for some input. I'm also looking into this, wondering if anyone has any firsthand experience. How well does it 'silence' when not going crazy?

We tested it on car here not too long ago. It quiets it down a bunch but it still kills power even when open. On a 350whp car it was chewing up something like 7-8hp. That ratio is only going to get more pronounced the more power the car makes.

Case in point-

My car had a full ETS 3.5" exhaust with 4 "aero turbine. It got to be a little too loud for me so I put a Magnaflow 12909 3.5" muffler on it. Quieted it right down, the car still made 648 on pump. I put it on E85 and back on the dyno the other day and noticed at 32psi I was down about 45whp. I turned it to 37psi and was down 50. This is on a BIG muffler at that so you can only imagine how a smaller silencer is going to affect things faster.

I am going to put a boost actuated dump on to get the power back and keep the car quieter when I am not ripping on it.
