Buschurs "view" on cam gears

Well, as I'm planning the engine modding stages for my EVO I was debating whether or not to get camgears when I upgrade my cams.

Anyhow I want the best overall powerband possible and saw a post by topspeed that setting the gears at 0.0 gives the best all around powerband.

Buschur's reasoning is that all his race cars are set at 0,0 as well.

For me I'm thinking of skipping the cam gears as well mainly cuz I'm cheap and dont wanna shell out the dough for cam gears....

whether i got with 272/272 or 280/280 set at 0,0 on my stock 05 Turbo

will my car still run fine?

On the stock 05 Turbo, will the 280's at 0,0 make more power than the 272's at 0'0?

Will I need to upgrade the valvetrain if i'm revving to 8-8500 RPM?s

please discuss and comment

I think Buschur's main articulated concern is mainly with the possibility of the gears coming loose and causing engine damage. I got them anyway to help me through emissions. There's a big difference in idle quality between 280s and 272s, especially at 0/0, if you aren't running a standalone. The difference in power between them with the stock turbo is probably much less significant than the idle/low RPM drivability issues. Also, peak power doesn't necessarily equate to faster acceleration overall, especially on the street.

BTW, I've seen a stock ECU car running 280s at 0/0. The idle was like a Harley but it didn't stall.

I have better idle quality with the 272 HKS cams than anyone I know stand alone or not without cam gears. I don't even remember what I set them at, it was one of the recomended settings on that huge thread about cam gears that was up here a year ago.... and I used red lock-tight on the bolts to avoid the problems Dave Buschur was concerned with. I wouldn't do it for power production, but on a street car with big cams it makes a big difference in idle quality.

Hey, I'm another "cam gear hater"... I always hate installing them, and I always tell the customer that I'll do it "against my better judgement"... I've yet to see proof that cam gears ever won a race (I have seen them stop one though), and 272s idle just fine if you use the better flashes out there. I've not had any personal experience with the 280s yet.

Im with Zeus on this one... 0,0 makes the best power. Thats why I thought people bought cams.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to make my own personal decision on this one, I'm setting my cams at 0-0...i'll prolly go 272-272 and call it a day since my car is daily driven

I would NOT run the car on stock valvetrain and shortblock past 7800rpm. Your stock connecting rods and bolts (especial the bolts) become an issue at the rpm levels you stated.

If you look on the buschur website, they say with the Buschur flash, that the RPM rev limit is moved up to 8500 RPM. I wonder if that is a standard rev limit on all the buschur flashes. If so, that is higher than most people say is safe.

I nearly blew the motor in my 95 Integra GSR when my cam gear bolts came loose. I was a newb then and thought they were tightened properly from the factory.

Thats gotta be a typo.

and afaik when you buy cam gears the 0,0 setting is still retarded compared to stock because of the dowel hole placement.

I have 264 i 272 e cams and no cam gears.

Idle is very good, and I just got my car inspected here in MA. However, they did not do a sniffer or anything, just commented that my exhaust (with silencer) was 'borderline', hehe.

If I failed emissions, I was going to re-install stock cat and cat-back, then try again. If I still failed, I was going to try cam gears, but so far hasn't been an issue.

When a guy built my N/A Integra GSR, the cam gears slipped 2x, resulting in bent valves that he had to fix. If I can get away without cam gears, I will do so. However, i have seen posts claiming improvements in idle quality and powerband with cam gears, but I'm happy with stock cam gears for now.

Take care,
