problem with wastegate(maybe)
problem with wastegate(maybe)
hello all, i am not hoding boost. here is the situation to date. i bought a whole lot of buschur racing stuff. pretty much stage 1-3. i have everything except the cams. and my car is tuned through WORKS. but i drilled and tapped holes for the lines to connect too so i know that that isnt the problem. my car is tuned to run 21 pds of boost on 95 octane gas. but here is what it is doing. in first gear it will go to 21 pds and then immediately drop down to 15-17 pds. and holds it there. 2nd gear is pretty much the same thing. but in thinrd it will do the same thing but when it gets down to 15-17 pds it will start creeping back up, but not quick enough to get to 21 pds before i get to redline. and when i am in 6th gear it holds boost fine(i drive a MR). and whn you are on it hard it first, second, and third. it has normal boost response. no slow boost response at all. it almost feels like that boost is coming on so fast in the early gears that somethings pops loose or cant hold the boost and it drops down but in first and second i am not there long enough for it to creep back up. but in sixth gear boost comes on relatively slow so it holds a little better. so this was about a month ago. and i spent a lot of time talking to buschur and WORKS tring to figure out what the problem is. so of course the first thing that they thought it was was a boost leak. but i was moving at the time so ididnt have time to really mess with it until this past weekend. needless to say i had leaks all over the place. i had leaks at the lower intercooler piping where it connects to the turbo. and i also had leaks at almost every coupling on the car. so i spent the better part of the day buttoning all those leaks up. ran the boost up using my pressure tester and nothing was leaking but I WAS STILL LOSING BOOST. so i kept checking and checking and i sprayed EVERYTHING down with soapy water. what the car was doing is that i was pressurizing(spelling) the car up to 25 pds and it would quickly leak down to 15-17 pds and then after that it would seep on down to 6-10 pds and hold there. and i had no clue where my boost was going, so all i could do was to keep running the pressure up and keep checking stuff and hope that the leak presents itself. so about the 30 millionth(if there is such a word) time of running up the boost using the pressure tester the car started making a loud squeling sound. which i though would allow me to better find the leak. so i started shaking pipes and all the hoses(tring to get the sound to change because i knew then where the leak was.) but i still couldnt find the leak. at this point i was getting frustrated. and to top it off the loud squeal just stopped on it own. so i was lost at this point. so i did the only thing i could do and that was to keep running up the boost and keep checking. and then i saw the waste gate. that little cap at the top that the hardline goes into was lifting up at around 15-17 pds of boost and continued lifting higher as i ran the boost up with the pressure tester to 25 pds. and it would bleed off boost until around 15-17 pds where it wold then close down. and i forgot to mention earlier that that was the same boost area that the squeal was happening. as soon as i got down to around 15-17 pds it would stop. so my question is. do you all think that my waste gate is gone or is this normal for a waste gate to do. thanks for all the help and i am sorry about the long thread that i wrote but i figured i would give the whole scenario so that there would be any questions later and for you all to give me the best advice.
so amybe i should unplug the connectors for the waste gate and GENTLY take it up and see if it goes over 17 pds. that is suppose to be the spring load for the stock waste gate right
sounds to be normal for your wastegate. disconnect your lower pipe from the turbo and disconnect your upper pipe from your throttle body. pressure test all this and use some soapy water and spray it on all the joints/couplers. good luck.
