Question Helical gear LSD?

I have the workshop manual for the Euro spec EVO8 and when looking at the general transmission information it says:

Front differential: Helical gear LSD

Anybody that knows what kind of front diff that really is? How does it compare to a Quaife or Ralliart LSD? Is it the same type that's in your RS cars maybe?

Cheers,

I just knew the "Helical gear" is not a brand name.

Quaife or Ralliart also use Helical gear..

am I wrong??

A quaife is a helical LSD just like the mitsu RS front LSD. I believe the raliart front diff is a clutch/plate type.

the rs lsd is helical... the quaife has some special proprietary stuff... like you can have one wheel up in the air and it will still do its business. but both qualify as helical lsds. helical is rather general... torque biasing is what quaife would like to refer to themselves as... a helical lsd just uses helical gears... that doesn't necessarily mean quaife. but the main difference would be the wheel in the air action.

The quaife and RS are both torque biasing LSD's and have no functional difference. The only difference is that the quaife housings are welded together while the RS housings are bolted.

Helical is the general term used for all torque biasing diffs.

oh crap forgot about hte electron beam welding on the quaife... yeah... i think that made room for some beefier parts inside... but still same gears and stuff basically.

does the ralliart one have hte onewheel up function?

I believe the true ralliart is a clutch and plate style just like what we have on the rear. It is supposed to be better for tarmac surfaces due to a more even distribution of the front axle tourque. The RS/Quaife would send all the power to the outside wheel (the one with the most traction) while the ralliart would split it better between the 2. The stock open just sends the power to the inside front which normally results in terminal understeer

no it's a variable clutch type... that's what acd is.

and the ralliart is indeed a helical. clutch types in the front are almost always never used becuase the fronts get too much action. the cusco ones are kind of an exception.

actually open diffs send power to wherever is most convenient, which is the path of least resistance. if you apply a brake to the inside wheel it will indeed send power to the outside wheel. which is how many awd systems in lux cars work.
