The end all discussion of cam gear

It no secret the car falls flat on its face at the higher rpms, but when you get aftermarket cams do the cam gears really yield that much of an improvement? I know they shift the power/torque curves, but at what risk?

So my question is..are cam gears worth the buy in (aside from bling)?

As you say, the evo does need help in the upper rpm range. Adjustable cam gears tune (shape) the power band and can improve idle. More radical valve timing from longer duration cams shifts and sharpens the power curve. The changes are usually to the high end where most power can be made. Look around a little before you spend money on gears as a lot depnds on how you plan on using your car.

Alot of people run cams without cam gears.

Thats what I plan on doing, I have 264/272 right now but I plan on getting a 272 intake cam to keep the torque curve up in the high end.

Based on what your asking I think longer duration cams are more important for your setup than cam gears.

If you want top end get a set of cams. Cam gears just ad additional adjustability so you can move the powerband up or down etc.

that's right, new cams will give you the power, the gear are more for fine tuning

If you retard the cams 2 degrees this will improve the top end..

Forget bling.

Adjustable cam gears allow one to move the powerband upward or downward in the rpm range. Also, the cam timing can be adjusted to improve the tractability of long duration cams.

Adjustable cam gears are a widely used tool that can be used to significant effect in any performance application. Those who claim otherwise don't own them and/or don't understand how to use them properly. Nevertheless, I should mention that to benefit from them fully, one should have a means of competent, comprehensive dyno tuning to extract the most from the new cam settings.

Ted is dead on. If you guys want some Dyno results with cam gear settings. Do a search by user Badazzcr and you will find tons of info on a Dynojet with different settings.

pruven performance evo runs on the stock cam gears.. david burschur recommends stock as well. adjustable cam gear bolts brake! happened to me and i have three pictures of the same pictures with broken bolts as well.. tell me its worth the risk please.. there is no need for them with 264/264 cams.. plus they cause major warranty/emmissions obstacles by having them on.
