Those with 264's

Well I am planing on putting cams in my evo my supporting mods are below. I have read just about every cam thread and i still cant decide.I am looking at getting HKS 264's but i am still not sure if that is what i want. I like the 272's because they have that nice idle, but I rather have performance over sound. Most competiton for me are mustangs, vettes, and camaros, all mostly on the highway. I need a cam that will help me pull away from those big V8's. Also i dont want to spend the extra money on cam gears, so does that mean 272's are out of the question? Am I making the right decision by going with the 264's? Will those of you running 264's let me know of any downsides with the 264, I just want to make the right decision before i spend all that money. Thanks

mods: tbe,intake,fuel pump,boostcontroller,clutch, 10.5 hotside, arp headstuds,and custom dynoflash.

I have 264s and love them. Last friday night at the drag strip I was able to pick up 25 mph in the second half, so the car definitely pulls well at the top end. I'm not sure if they pull quite as well as the 272s at the top, but it is nice having a smoother idle, especially when stuck in traffic. The only possible downside is slightly less top end power, but I don't think it's much if there even is any.

I went 11.90's on 264's, stock turbo and all. Car drives great and seemed to respond as good or better as the stock cams from off idle to 3000 rpm.

Very happy with my 264's as well. I've never driven/rode in a car with 272's but I've heard they have a little more top end.

You might check out people who are doing 264/272 or 272/264 (not sure which it is).

272's are not known for thier idle. Cam gears/ tuning can help

264's are still lumpy, but mild and felt great after a good flash.

AMS has some dyno plots of 264's, 272's and stock (on a DSM), but it should still give you an idea.

I used to have 264's in my previous Evo and there was no loss in power anywhere and a big improvement topend. The idle was just a tad lopier than stock, but nothing too noticable. You may also want to look at the GSC's they have had very good results.

i have hks 264/i/e. love them. Reason for these are i because i have alot of turbo lag i choose these cams to help out in the low end..rather for top end. I have heard 264's are a little easier to pass smog on..but i cant prove it a 100%, havent smoged it yet. at idle my car sounds like a mopar muscle car with a crazy lump idle. sounds awesome. people always ask me if its really a 4cyl

I don't think there is hardly any difference from 264 to 272's on stock turbo. I have 272's with cam gears set at 0,0 (dont ask why I bought them) Idle is a little lumpy but never stalled. Big difference from stock cams. Either one you choose you will definitely be happy!

I have HKS 264s. I had originally planned on sticking with the stock turbo and a piggyback or ecu flash for tuning. I have since changed my mind and I'm going with EMS and possibly larger turbo in the near future (which makes me wish I had gone with 272 cams and gears.)

For the most part I'm happy with the 264s. They pull a lot harder on the top end than the stock cams and only have a mildly lopey idle with no stalling out. But since I'm a lazy person and swapping cams is a little more than I want to pay, I will stick with the 264s.

From what I hear the 264's make about the same power on the street as the 272's, but the 272 will out perform on the drag strip. Most Japanese tuners go for lower duration and higher lift (HKS both have the same lift) when building a street vehicle.

I have HKS 264s on my car and I like them too, but I regret on not getting the 272s because you can make extra 20hp with them and have the same dyno graph. The reason I say that because on my dyno day, another with basically the same mods as me expect he had the 272s, he put down 356 and I did 333. As far as dyno graph we were almost the same in the low end and mid.

I wouldnt think that there would be that (20hp) big of a difference in simply switching from 264 to 272..maybe a boost leak...

I'm running 264i/272e HKS cams, and i love this combo...I was able to pull nice hp numbers with very nice torque as well. Its a great compromise between top end power and low end torque on the street, especially with the stock turbo. And you can get away with running no cam gears even with straight 272's, but you won't be able to fine tune them without the cam gears, i.e. your idle won't be as steady and you will be missing out on maybe 4-5 whp.

There is a minimal difference of the the 264s vs the 272s with the stock turbo. However, bigger gains might be able to be seen from having a bigger turbo and running more boost.

I got the 272s... why not? The low-end is just about identical to the 264s and if I do get a bigger turbo, I got em... The bad? Rough idle? Some say thats a bad thing, I dont consider that a downside, I think it sounds badass and my car has NEVER stalled in 15k miles with the 272s. Id get the 272s again if I had the choice, maybe even the 280s!
