More Cam questions

It seems cam selection is one of the most discussed topics on these boards. Everyone has their favorites, HKS, GSC, Buddy Club, Piper, Crower, WORKS, Jun, Tomei, etc. Staggered cams, theories on cam gears or not, what settings; Road racing, daily driver, street racing, drag only. I'd love to hear from some of the major tuners as to what they prefer to use in different situations. Now I can appreciate your own "trade secrets", but some info on preference and experiences would be great. If you can comment on some of the less mainstream that would be great as well. Perhaps a non-WORKS tuner regarding the 269s, and real world experiences with Tomei, and Jun. I realize I am asking of your valuable time, but any and all help would be appreciated. Buschur? Al? AMS? Vishnu? RRE? WORKS? Switzer? TurboTrix? Pruven? Anyone else?

In my personal opinion the Tomei Procam and the Jun 264's are the best for overall spool up. However, they both require upgraded springs and retainers. Low duration and high lift=great turbo cams. This is the JDM rule of thumb...If you are solely going for drag racing the 272's or even the 280's are the way to go with out a doubt. Hope this helps.

We have been using the HKS line for over 5 years now and couldnt be happier. there New 280 cam puts our Great power on a bigger turbo and the other cams all have there place based on performance modification. When choosing a camshaft you REALLY need to sit down and choose a direction for the car and its main purpose. once you have that sorted out I can put you in a cam setup that is great for you. Another camshaft that we have played with a little bit are the Tomei Procams. AWESOME big power cams that we highly recomend.

^^ditto^^, depending how you would like to set-up your car, really is the main influence in your choice. We have had great experience with HKS and GSC, but haven't had the oppurtunity to test out the Tomei or JUN, maybe next on the EVO.

what about the WORKS cams? Better for over all daily driving? Real lumpy idle on any of these cams? I'm curious to know the "behind the scenes" with these cams. . .

I would have to agree with Eric from AMS. When building a car the best way to do so is to chose the path you which to go down and make a selection on what you mainly want out of the car.

We have been using HKS cams for a long time and have had great success with them as well. I know Crower just released some EVO cams that work pretty well, but as for the other companies we havent really played with them. We really like the HKS cams. That is what is run in all of our cars. As for cam gears we have always recommended to run stock cam gears over adjustable. For example using HKS cames for a good daily driver I would recommend straight 264's or I would go with the 264 in / 272 ex. For a Street / Track / Strip car I would recommend 264in. / 272ex. or straight 272's. If you are looking for a really agressive cam that makes good power on a large turbo as Eric stated I would go with the 280's. You can run straight 272's on a daily drive if you would like but I know some people do not care for a lopey idle, and sometimes if not tuned properly they can cut down on driveability. I hope this helps.

Take Care,

Im interested to hear why you are recommending a larger exhaust cam vs intake cam when our stock setup has an opposite orientation?

How about 272 on intake and 264 on exhaust? Is that a good combo? Why or why not?
