Yup a long stroke that can rev past 8000. It is tiny in comparison to many applications but I assume you mean starting with a 1.8? Anyway the evo does have short stroke but not compaired to those 1.6's and 1.8's

Actually, the long 3.46" stroke of the EVO isn't short even by V8 standards. Compare the stroke of a Chevy 350 at 3.48", which isn't considered a 'short stroke' engine. The 4G63 is designed to give good torque for its displacement at the expense of some increased friction. This is advantageous for a small engine in a heavy chassis.

Revving a long stroke motor past 8000rpm isn't difficult. The difficult part is long-term durability.

so adding a 10.5 is worth it? how much spool is lost. Would it be made up by adding a header, and 02 housing?

Yes but the 4G63 is built to last a long time with its construction. I Have had my 1st one last well past 100,000 miles and with over 400 HP, I hope teh evo does the same.

so how DO you go about and make MORE torque? Making more hp is EASY, but making more torque isn't.

Besides going with a stroker kit, what other mods can really help make more torque?

Alchy injection and bump the stock turbo up 26~27psi. Stock turbo at that psi turns the car into a tq monster.

You can sell your stock turbo. Turbod is selling a use TME one for $700 shipped.

I would put the 250 into a use TME if it was me but it's your money.

I am actually going to get the 6.5TME and put the 9.8 housing on it. I want faster spool and low-end torque more than I want horsepower. I will port, polish, and ceramic coat the 9.8 before installing it though...

I barely noticed any additional lag after I added my 10.5 hotside. WORKS did change my boost map to help spool up though. After driving around with it for a while, I don't even notice it any more. The additional power is though.

The factory turbo and intake tuning is most efficient at midrange rpm, so making the most out of torque potential means making the engine's efficiency match the efficiency and tuning of the turbo and mechanicals.

This includes:

Appropriate cams and cam timing
Using every bit of available turbo efficiency at midrange rpm
Sufficient fuel capability
Meticulous tuning

The WRC car does a very good job of this, and makes something like 400ft/lb at 3500rpm.
