If you want to increase torque you need to get a higher "lift" cam (new valves and springs) rather than a cam with longer duration - where you want to keep the feeling of torque in the lower rpms... Or

Just slap some cam gears on the stockers and retard your timing so you can run higher boost. Whalla

I was told by a well known tuner here in Ca. that there is no difference in spool between 264-264 and 272-272.He said that the 264 set-up is a waste of $$$.I want my car set up for auto-cross and canyon driving so this advice has confused me.

Has anybody tried the Tomei, Jun or Piper cams. This same tuner said that any of there cams would walk away from the HKS 264 or 272 set-ups.I plan on using the stock turbo or Busher 's new 20G.

Thanks

Looking at AMS's dyno sheets if you plan on sticking with the stock turbo the 264's look like the way to go for the street or autocross. I think they might be good for drag racing too according to those dyno graphs. Their only 2 hp off of the 272's and they make 10 ft/lbs more torque. I would like to see some of the higher lift cams thrown in that comparison but, I understand why they didn't with the whole changing valve springs issue.

so you think that the 264's would be the best? cause i want more power like from 3500-4000 up, and i was thinking i could get cams (dont know which ones yet) and cam gears so i could move the power towrad the top. more opinions please!

I never understood the reason of going 272/264. WHy would you suck in all that air only to have it choke (realative to the 272 intake) on the way out.

264 intake and 272 exhaust makes sense if you want a good idle, the reason why a 272 causes a poorer idle is that the intake vaccum is compromised and not as stable where as the 264 doesn't alter it significantly enough to cause a problem. You want to get as much air in and hot AIR OUT as fast as possible.

I went 272/272 and if you want the most power that is how it is done.

Someone should try a 264/280, that aughta be interesting

I think people try 272/264 because the stock cams are staggered in a similar fashion.

yeah the 272/264 is because with the stock cams, the intake valve is open longer than the exhaust cam.
i think im gonna go with the 272/272 setup, and for those with this setup, where does power come on and when does it stop?

Here is what I made with 272's, notice he hits the gas at 3500 and it spools INSTANTLY, I get 23PSI by 3200 and this is on a 9.8 hotside.
