EGT probe breaking?!!!!

Okay folks,

My EGT probe just broke inside my manifold. How I noticed? Well I was accelrating normally then there was a sudden hesistation followed by the car slowing down a lttle. Look over at my EGT guage to find no reading. Pulled car over and didnt notice anything obvious. Went and drove home right away. Notice car a little slower pickup but nothing too dramatic. Car still held boost fine. Got home, took off EGT probe to find it BROKEN! I am pretty sure my turbo is toasted. I am going to take apart my turbo to try and retreive it but I am sure the blades are all bents or nicked. I am just disappointed in how it broke. It was an Apexi ELII EGT guage probe. Has anyone else has this problem before? Do you think APEXI will cover it under warrenty or am I on my own. I didnt EVER expect an EGT probe to break! Oh well.

Thanks for hearing me rant!

Alfred

the conditions in the exhaust is harsh....rich(soot), lean, sudden heating....the soot forms on the surface of the 304SS/inconel sheath of the thermocouple from the combustion + the 800-900C heating drives the formation of carbides. heating, cooling, vibration will eventually cause the TC to fall apart..............not too much you can do.

How many miles do you have on your probe? On my 1g DSM, my greddy EGT probe broke after 2 years and ~30k miles, mostly highway. EGT probes should be a maintenance item.

Less than 500 miles. It was brand new. Brought from the Apexi sale earlier this year.

I am very disappointed.

buy a type K t/c replacement from omega.com. Just measure the length of the sheath, specify inconel/grounded....and armored leads.....IIRC...its ~$50

the best you can buy are inconel grounded......w/o resorting to exotics like platinum or iridium..

This is fairly common.. I am from the RX7 world with higher EGTs then the evo and it is a common occurance.. We always tap the EGT in the downpipe about 3 inches from the turbine.

Your readings are a little low, but you don't have to worry about damaging your turbine wheel.

I guess the thing to do is to use 2 T/C, one in the mani, one in the downpipe. Measure the 2 and see the difference, then remove and plug up the hole in the manifold.
