ARC catch can...and catch cans in general?

So, I saw the ARC catch can a few weeks ago and thought it looked great. Fit into the whole engine bay perfectly.

My question is...why are there 3 inlet/outlets on it. (not including the 2 for reading the amount of fluid in the catch can)

I haven't been able to find an install guide or anything on the net.

Thanks.

The two small inlets are as follows:

1) Facing the engine, on the right side of the valve cover is the crankcase breather hose that goes to the turbo inlet pipe. One attaches to this point on the valve cover.

2) On the back of the valve cover is the PCV valve. The second hose attaches here.

The final hose is a larger gauge and just drops to the bottom of the car to vent fumes to atmosphere.

Tah dah, all done.

Hi,

I have two DIY catch cans, one on the breather side and one on the PCV side, using the Campbell Hausfield (sp) filters. The PCV valve catches a fair amount of oil, very little on the breather side. I empty the PCV side about once a week.

I decided to do this after finding some oil in the MAF tube when installing my Samco IC hoses.

My car runs pretty well, and I get 21 MPG, which has been an improvement from when the car was newer. Don't know how much the catch cans helped if at all. I'm not interested in the bling (I have baby shades and no wing ), but I'm glad the oil I dump into my drain pan isn't getting recirculated into the intake manifold.

YMMV.

Take care,

You have to dump your pcv valve catch tank once a week???? That doens't seem right....

I've got the Greddy catch can and I've never had to empty it, in fact, the hose barely has discoloration and its been on the car for 15,000 miles...

Hey guys,

I'll see if I have pics. The filter is small, and I don't "need" to empty it once a week. It's not very much oil, sorry, didn't mean to imply that. This was on par with a few other posters who had a similar setup. It was stolen from an SRT page, heh.

Campbell Hausfeld filters ROCK!

Instant $20 catch can!

Check out www.chpower.com

Their entire product line, including the filters are available at Home Depot!

Just be sure to use the appropriate size fittings for either end of the filter.

Don't they have a warning label on those CH filters that say you should avoid synthetic oils and such as it could cause the unit to explode?

Hi,

Yeah, that's the filter.

There was a debate in the orig thread about keeping the filter in or removing it. Others claimed to trap more oil without the filter. I chose to keep the filter since I hope it acts like a baffle to help the oil condense out of the vapor.

Just imagine two of those zip tied in the engine bay with some hose, sorry no actual pics, hehe.

There is a warning on the filter about synthetic oils. The exploding part is about pressure buildup, IIRC, not specific to the oil. There is a release valve on the bottom that should prevent too much pressure from building up. I think the oil may make the filter or the tube break down? I've had mine for almost 15K miles and it's been ok. I've switched the replaceable filters out once as well.

You chose well. The glass frit turns yellow long before you see any evidence of oil in the cup or tubing. I'm convinced that without the frit most of the oil passes right through.
