Drivetrain noise

I purchased an 03 Evo with 18k on the odometer and have noticed a noise coming from what seems to be the front drivetrain area. If I downshift or let off the gas anywhere between 2500rpms and up, there is a loud noise coming from what the tranny or differential. I know these cars make more noise than usual due to the AWD setup, but is this noise normal? It is a loud humming or whining noise and it's getting me concerned, especially since 2nd gear seems to be going bad now too. It scrathes even at low RPMs, downshift or upshift.

Wha?? Dude that is not normal. That is a sign of a bad transfer case. Take it back to the dealership and have them replace it for you under warranty.

So is it normal or not? It sounds like a loud gear noise.

+1 But take it to a dealer with a reputation for good drivetrain work on Evos. A local Evo club should have some good recommendations. You certainly don't want the dealer making it worse by causing other issues...

You will get raped at the dealer and most likely will not honor your warranty even unmodified..

Check out Teamrip's site before going to dealer...

Ok, I had a neighbor who claims he used to be a Mitsubishi mechanic take a look at the car. I took him for a drive around the block to show him the noises the car is making. Right away he told me this is a normal sound for an AWD car. I still don't believe it.

When I let off the gas, particularly at higher RPM's (above 3k), the car makes a very loud whining and occassional clunking sound. Like something is loose or rattling. If I downshift or attempt to rev match the RPM's, it does the same thing. The car is stock with zero mods, so it isnt a pipe rubbing or anything like that. The car has almost 20k on the odometer and has a 100k warranty. I just don't want to waste my time (this is my daily driver) and take the car to a dealer only to have them tell me its normal.

I suppose it could be something as simple as a fluid change needed, but I really have no clue. I am just learning about these cars and every search I do on a bad transfer case, there is conflicting info and nothing set in stone.

Any ideas? Should I just take the damn thing into the dealership and see what they say?

Anyone know of any good dealerships in the SF Bay Area?

I have the same problem. Rattling noise when Im decelerating at high rpm, not sure what it is but its been like that for 4 to 5k miles. Noise goes away when I hit the clutch and/or go into neutral.

Same for me. The noise goes away when I depress the clutch or go into neutral. Seems to only happen when the drivetrain is under load.
