Bad Synchro or clutch?

When I'm daily driving and shifting, I have keep my foot on the clutch (stock) for like 3 sec before sliding to gear. If not, I'll get a notchy type of resistance, not quite grinding, but close enough.. and wouldn't be smooth. When I first noticed it about March, it only occurs shifting to 3rd. Now, its beginning to affect the other gears. Also, I've been getting a "lockout" going to reverse. It taikes me 2-3 tries before it'll slide in to reverse. Is this a Synchro or a clutch prob?

Try adjusting your clutch a little bit. If that doesn't help then its your syncros and you'll need a rebuild.

alot of people c/o the oem clutch feeling "notchy", alot of people remedy this w/ good transmission fluid(bg syncroshift or penzoil syncromesh). how many miles do you have on your car? i have trouble shifting into 5th at high rpm which i think is contributed to synchro prob.

Sounds like a syncro problem. I have heard of many other people having the same problems. My car had all of it's syncros changed before I got it and the only problem I have is high RPM 5th gear grind which is a syncro problem but seems impossible to fix. The 03's had problems with the syncros so if yours haven't been done that is most likely it. One way to test is try double clutching and see it goes into gear ok then.

The EVO 5 speed shifter is notchy. Unless you are getting grinds while shifting your synchros are not going bad. Things that might help:

1. If you have installed a new clutch you probably need to re-adjust your clutch pedal.

2. To help with smoother shifting you can also change your tranny fluid (not TC, not rear diff) to Pennzoil Synchromesh.

Do a search a lot of this has been covered before ... Hope that helps ...

I'm surprised no one mentioned it, but there are TSBs for the synchro's, the input shaft, and the reverse idler gear. Go have all of those replaced/fixed per the TSB.

I wish they make a recall instead of TSB. TSB means nothing if the warranty is already void

If you didn't notice he has an 03 EVO, that only had the TSB for 4-5 gear synchro ... The TSB you speak of is for the non-MR 05s ...

I would try tranny fluid first, especially if it has been 15k since the last tranny service.

When trying to get it in reverse... slowly let out the clutch while pushing it into reverse, it should go in just fine... That thing happens on A LOT of cars, even with brand new trannies

I did notice he had an 03, but I had no idea there was a separate TSB for 5spd 05s. I have never read that or seen it anywhere, but I do know that the Mitsu dealership we all use here has cars in there all the time getting synchros fixed under warranty, and many times, they just do all the synchros at once instead of just the 5th gear synchro. This is on 03/04s, too, not 05s. There was one on the lift getting this very service done (for free) when I was waiting for my clutch install, in fact.
