Installing Springs/Retainers

Okay, got the Works 269 Cams and their spring/retainer kit. Anyway, been reading/searching here for all the info/tools I'll need. I went and ordered the AMS tensioner tool but one thing I wasn't able to find was a tool for compressing the valve springs without removin the head. From what I've been reading, the standard/universal ones won't work too well, so does anyone have a link or any other info on a good way for me to do this? I'll probably use the rope method to hold the valve up since I don't have ready access to a compressor...what size rope you recommend? Thanks...

Sounds interesting, never done this procedure before. Let us know how it goes when you get to it.

The snap-on universal or the Keeper-eeze. I'll find some links for you. I have the snap-on tool and it works but I wish I would have bought the keeper-eeze.

Sweet! So you recommend the Keeper-Eeze over the snap-on? I just hate havin to pay so much for something that'll probably be just a one time use thing. Any reason why you would pic it over the snap-on?

I got the cams/springs sittin in my trunk right now and I'm not in any rush to put em on..I'd rather wait til I have the right tools to do it right, ya know?

Thanks again...

The Snap-On was enough of a pain in the *** that I wont do the install for customers... maybe it is my big paws, but that was not a nice experience.

I'd like to give the Keeper-Eaze a try...

The Snap-on is definitely a pain in the ***, it will take 5x longer than you think it should. Its the standard problem with using a universal tool. The keep-eeze is one hell of a tool.

You can also just buy the basic tool along with 33mm and 35mm sleeves. I think its still going to be a $200+ investment.

yeah...I figured as much...Since really this is just a one time thing, I guess I could sell the tool and make SOME money back here on evoM....I mean, even if I ever decide to go with bigger cams, the springs/retainers will be just fine...so I don't really see myself usin it more than once, unless somethin breaks...(fingers crossed)

How much does WORKS charge for the install, isnt it like $400 or so? I could look at my invoice (too lazy) but I had a bunch of stuff done at the same time, so im not exactly sure how much the cams, valvesprings/retainers cost to install. But if its $200 for the tool, another $200 and you dont have to deal with the headache, also will they still warranty it if you install it?

Oh also your gonna have to get them to flash your ecu for the cams, I raised my redline to 8K rpm. I just think it would be easier if they did it, but thats just me. If you get it done and have no problems, cool but I wouldnt trust myself

yeah, I thought about that, but to be honest, half the enjoyment I get out of modding my car is from doin all my installs myself (yes, that may mean I MIGHT mess somethin up from time to time). I'm a generator service tech by trade (diesel and natural gas) so I know my way around an engine, even though I haven't torn into a 4G63 before. As far as a flash is concerend, I'm runnin XEDE right now and when I get my new front mount installed, I'll have Shiv flash my ECU to raise the rev and the boost limit as well as tune it for me. I don't know, somethin about the satisfaction I get when I do somethin myself...

Hey, OT question, but I read ur sig and u have any idea when Works will be releasin their water injection? I'll probably go with theirs...

Look at the miller vavle spring tool, it works well. Tap the retainers with a large socket to loosen the keepers before compressing them. Your first time will not be fun, just take your time and try not to arch your back doing the intake side.
