WARNING! EVO Front Differential Issue?!

We were recently installing a Quaife on an 03 EVO with around 30k and discovered this:

We were shocked to say the least! The customer frequents the track so do doubt the car sees some abuse, but we didn’t expect this one. According to the customer the car is not launched. The car is on the stock clutch and has our TR340 package.

The car was making some strange drive train noise but nothing major, not really out of the EVO-ordinary.

Looks like the Quaife is a better investment than anyone thought!

i would FEDEX that to a mitsu engineer & have them explain to us why they use such cheap metals in the drivetrain. the Quaife really helps corner speeds...

Yeah. 05's+ have helical front LSD like the Japanese ones have always had. The quaife is also a helical type LSD I believe.

03, 04 have VCU POS - Viscous coupling unit piece of s'

This is why quality sucks! I'm sure this is not the only part that is a POS.

Bummer…..

We've seen only a few of the ends shear off where it plugs into the viscous coupling and I do suspect this rare occurrence to be most likely due to non-uniform mixing of the graphite during the casting process. Graphite is mixed into grey iron during the casting process to make the material more wear resistant and less brittle and I suspect this to be merely a fluke more than a TSB or full blown recall type item so let’s not light the witch hunt torches just yet. And besides the location this break would certainly glow pink on an FEA.

The Mitsu-Ralliart helical limited slip front diffs that I sell feature an induction hardened case and end snout and I doubt that it will ever fail even with some of you crazies behind the wheel.

interesting, i have only seen the Cusco for JDM evos only. Not USDM. So is the quaife and ralliart the only options?

Just out of curiousity, what were the symptoms of that....right now when i turn into corners, either going normal speeds or on the gas, i get this really LOUD whining...and it mainly happens when i go turn...but sometimes it gets soo bad that even when i go straight i hear it...but it stops after a lil bit...but ALWAYS when i turn thats what i hear...i wonder if that could be it...im not much on trans/transfercase.....so i dont know what it could be....dont mean to hack ur thread either..but no need to start a new one, if there is a topic like this already.

Thanks,
Jay

Are Quaife diffs still a pain in the *** to get? I was thinking of putting one in when i do a clutch swap.
