Thumbs down 5th gear grind

Picked up a little grind this week, not cool. Been rough on the car a few times, drag strip once, few un-official drifting events, etc, but nothing too rediculous. This is not my first AWD car and I have been aware of the sometimes weak clutch so I always have that in mind.. Noticed yesterday the shifting from 4th to 5th will grind slightly, only if I am shifting out of 4th under load.. The clutch is fully depressed when the dog teeth grind.. If I am cruising in 4th (no acceleration) and shift to 5th with a single clutch press, there is no grind. Seems like any time I am accelerating in 4th (even just a little bit) and shift to 5th at normal shifting speed, I will get a small grind. The grind is always the same, and does not seem any more pronounced under hard acceleration/shifting vs. soft acceleration/shifting, its either there or its not.. Double clutching does eliminate the grind..

I'd love to relate this problem to the clutch, but more logically it seems like a synchro.. although 4th -> 5th is typically a shift that doesnt get as much rough treatment, except for those 120mph+ runs, at the local... track.. Only been with the car for a month (5000 mi.) too..

I get the same damn thing, read up on it, it's a known issue, I haven't looked into it much yet because I'm dealing with other things but I'm only getting problems as I got into more modifications on my car.

If your car is new take it to the dealer they should fix it for free it's a known issue, I know it's a pain in the a$$ but you gotta do it before other parts get damaged

I get a loud grind however from your description and it's only under a load as well.

I never drag or strip just alot of spirited street driving.

Yea I've been doing some research and it looks pretty common unfortunately.. None of the threads seem to have outcomes though! only people talking about their grinding gears....

My last car was in the shop for 5 weeks this summer, JUST got the Evo and it'll kill me to bring it back in for an unknown amount of weeks so soon, but if it has to be done it has to be done. Plus I dont want to take the TBE off

Just bring it to a mod friendly dealer and your set.

although I don't know if this applies to the 2005 model, there was a TSB specifically for a 5th gear grind.. I had it fixed at no charge at the time I noticed it happening, unfortunately the transmission has never really been 100% the same since it was fixed and I'm noticing now there seems to be something else wrong (after 30,000 additional miles with very little abuse)

The good news is that it sounds like your problem may be covered under that TSB, however if you have abused the car, and missed a shift one good time into 5th gear, you'll cause that grind..

Unfortunately on my car, my shift gates feel different lately, its easy to miss gears and get locked out when it never used to happen, feels like the selectors are bent and not aligned correctly.. but take it to the dealer to have them look at it..
