considering down-grading cams

Ok.. well I've had straight 272's for a while now and I'm kinda of disliking the uncomfort of them during traffic.. I never stall anymore btw but I get occasional idle dips and driving the car with these cams is uncomfortable. Normally I drive in traffic 2 times a day 40 miles back and forth, sometimes when I go out late night I get to feel the power of my 272's with little cars around.. I love it but.. not something I can do everyday.. thus the need for straight 272's are not needed.

The top end power is amazing however it seems like it never wants to die out.. now what I'm considering is getting a smaller duration intake cam..

I've read alot of people on the forum has been going with 264i and 272e, that's one of the best set ups for this car isn't it?

I plan on staying on the stock turbo and if I was to ever upgrade it.. I would probably go along the 20G (not a huge turbo) route because this is only a daily driver and I have no big real time goals besides being a street monster.

Any opinions to my plans... I love reading opinions

Ohh.. and.. I would definately reccommend 272 cams on the stock turbo if you like drag and don't need to drive this car in traffic everyday.. just not comfortable enough for my taste

you know I should've went with 264's... I pretty did all my mods in a month time and I was going power frenzy so I had to go for 272's.. I don't want to buy 2 more cams so I'm thinking smaller duration on intake cam will be more suitable on a daily driver.

I have my stock cams as well.. they are sitting in my closet.

This is my first "cammed" car... after what I felt.. I am never.. never.. ever.. going back to stock cams.... I think 264/272 will do me good

Why do you feel that your 272 setup isn't streetable? What do you mean by "disliking the uncomfort of them during traffic"? I've got straight 272's and I have never had any problems "discomfort" at all.

I don't feel its not streetable.. I just don't think they fit in great with myself, I really drive in horrid stop and go traffic daily, along with winter coming up now it's going to be 5x worse...

I'm not saying they are not streetable just looking for something a little more streetable and from someone who's not upgrading to a larger turbo.. I don't see a much different in hp/tq if I was to downgrade a smaller intake cam..

Ok.. maybe I should just keep my set up.. but see the thing is I'm wondering.. my idle is good.. not bad.. but I would definately NOT say it's better than stock.

The thing is I got cam gears a while ago but after the addition of cam gears I did not flash my ECU again.. I just changed the settings to -4/-1.5.. it did get rid of idle lope but it does come back on and off.. and it really comes back when I'm sitting in traffic, but it does NOT stall my car.

I posted a thread here a while ago and I can't seem to find it.. noone answered me so I thought I might as well ask it again.

For people with cam gears.. I know you must do alot of tuning on your car to have them try different settings.. examples -2/-2, -3/-3 is what people seem to like.. also for 272 cams.. silversurfer has acknowledged he has had the best results from those settings.. giving him a stock or better than stock idle.

Everytime I was to try a different cam gear settings... would this require a flash each and every time I try it out... IE.. does this ONLY move the powerband of the cams or does it move the air flow ratios as well?.. am I making sense?

Right now I'm only looking for PERFECTION.. I'm done modding my car for the rest of the year.. winter is coming.. but in the mean time I want everything I have done to my car to run properly.

264/272 seems to be the best streetable performance out right now for every day driving.

Dude I think your making this situation up in your head and your remedy of downgrading will do nothing. I have straight 272s and I constantly drive in traffic and I have absolutely no complaints. You wont notice anything going to the 264 cams. Havent you seen dyno graphs of stock EVO vs 264s vs 272s. Dont waste your time and money. The 272s even going from stock had no ill effects what so ever on my low end or or driveabilty and believe me, Id be the first to complain, I drive 30k mi a year and Im in stop and go quite often.

264/272 has the lobe too. not like 272s or 280s But it is enough to disturb any music in your car.
