How difficult is it to replace the syncro's?
I am thinking about replacing the syncro's in my transmission the next time I do a clutch. I have been in other manual transmission, just not from an Evo. Has anyone done this so far? I know that I can send it out to be done, but I am not new to this so if I can do so and save the money I will. I just do not know if the Mitsu tranny needs any special tools in order to accomplish this. It used to be a normal thing for shops to overhaul transmissions, now it seems to be considered a dark art or something. There is really not much to a manual transmission. I would probably go through the whole thing while in there, I just need to see if anyone else has some experience in our tranny.....
I have replaced synchros in my old Evo 5speed. There are no special tools needed exept a hydraulic press, and good pictures of the order of the parts, thats it. Oh, also get some Hondabond or similar silicone for sealing.
Not too bad. Good pics, shop manual helps. Hondabond is a good tip as well, too. I think more than likely the hardest part will be getting the tranny out of the car. Since you can do that, you should be OK.
Hey superz, about what did the syncro's run you? Normally they are not very expensive at all, but I have learned my lesson with Mitsubishi parts. Or at least some of them. Also, did you do anything else while in there besides mic'ing everything and making sure it was set to spec?
HMSevo8, I have the shop manual to use, but I have noticed that the shop manual is a bit light on details sometimes.....

I also keep grinding 3rd lately, probally explains the metal.
There were some upgraded factory parts and TSB due to the initial issues. Contact TRE...I know they do the TSBs and such when they do a build.

So would I. My clutch is still pretty good (I think) but I have been grinding fourth some. I am going to try and wait until it is time for the clutch before I tackle it, and I am going to do some research to see if there are any tricks to be done once in there to smooth things out some. If anyone else gets the part numbers before I do then post up what we need. If you get the chance take A LOT of pictures and let us know where the hard parts were and what you had to do to get around them.
Also, I would suggest San Raphel Mitsubishi for your parts, they give a discount to EvoM members and their prices are the best that I have found. And I have looked.

That's kinda what I meant. See if they can fax you a parts list with the latest and greatest. Or a list of the aftermarket double or triple cone synchros they use...

"February 2005 TRE will sell parts to those that want to buy them.
However, I will NOT sell parts unless you have your transmission apart and have fully inspected ALL parts for wear or damage. If you can't tell the difference between worn or damaged parts you shouldn't be in the transmission in the first place. Now don't get upset, if you know what you need I'll be glad to sell you the parts. "
I think I will tear the car apart next weekend and give them a call
