Turbo Comp. Surge Fixes?
Turbo Comp. Surge Fixes?
Guys, I've read where compressor surge, under load, is caused by the fact that the particular compressor is producing more air flow than the engine can ingest and thus the 'backup/flow' of the air back towards the compressor causing the surging. This produces unwanted loads on the thrust bearing causing premature turbo failure.
The same sort of thing happens when boosting and the throttle plate is shut; where all that boost pressure backs up towards the compressor causing surge, thus the use of the blow off valve to release that pressure and saving the thust bearing.
Some turbo compressor housings come with surge ports built into the inlet area to help reduce the onset of surge under load! Now, if your turbo surges under load and does not have the builtin ports, is there a way to have some sort of a port added?
Once I got a glimpse of a gt35r which looked like it had the curved surface of the 4inch inlet of the compressor drilled with holes around the entire circumfrence which I now believe to be added surge ports. If they are they certainly seem to work because I have not heard of this turbo ever surging!
So is it possible to have surge ports added to your turbo and where would one send the compressor housing to have it done, if possible that is??

you do not need to have this done on smaller turbos, on big turbo's yes.. so if you have the prob, or will have the prob, either buy a housing with the ports in it, or send yours to the manufacture, or dealer who does do it.. say a gt series, either call ams, or garrett themselfs and ask.. but if your hearing surge, with a small turbo when you let off, you need to adj. or replace you b.o.v... small turbo's very rarely surge.. but you didnt say what turbo you want this done to so we really cant help you.. is it a stocker, a garret, turbonetics, and so one.
dafarmer69 is correct... the stock turbo should not surge unless your BOV is on tight. If your going with a 20g they are now offering a compressor cover with surge ports. If you get anything bigger than stock I suggest getting the surge ports.
small turbos can surge though, since ve is a function of rpm if you have something that spools too fast it can surge at low rpms where the ve is low due to low rpm and it will remedy itself in the mid and high range. sruge "tuning" is all about ridding the entire setup of all the "sweet spots" or rather NON sweet spots. so you have to look at it hollistically.
another way to get rid of surge is to get a different compressor cover, there are many available for the gt35 and it woulda prolly been best if you just got the right one to begin with from a company like ams etc who has this kinda stuff well sorted already. i think br's 20g is remedied now because they're using the 9 cover.

And who does the AMS gt35r turbo, thats a nice one?
