Lightbulb Metal-substrate cat vs. old ceramic cat

Hey guys,

A customer bought his 3" high flow cat for us to install and I thought it might be interesting to compare the Helix metal-substrate vs an outdated ceramic design.

Benefit of Metal-substrate catalytic converters:
Metal-Substrate catalytic converters are more efficient, decreasing environmental hazards because the level of pollution is reduced. In addition, metal is more durable and efficient for converting noxious gases into safe ones. In fact, metal foils, the material used to make the metallic structure were found to improve conversion by 15 percent.

Metal Core:
-Stronger and more durable
-Capable of withstanding higher temp
-Better flow rate than Ceramic
-More resistant to vibration

Here are some pictures:

ceramic substrates are pretty strong too. I tried to destroy my HFC( one in the middle). so I could make a hollow test pipe.
I coudln't gutt it out. I used chisels direct on the ceramic. it was solid as rock. I only manged to remove about 10% of it. so my UR HFC has 10% less efficent but 10% more flow

I have a Random Tech metallic substrate cat. The company told me over the phone that their metallic substrate units are much better flowing than their ceramic units.

Take responsibility for your own actions, think about the future for our kids and our already polluted air, dude.

Try to minimize your carbon foot-print.

The whp between a Helix HFC and a test pipe is only around 7-10whp but then you will not have to worry about cops smelling your exhaust fume from a mile away. Also...its better for the enviornment.

Thanks,
Tom

Can one assume that it is CARB certified then?

Which metal catalyzer will fit the stock system?

I was thinking about installing a 2,75" cat in my stock system, but I was thinking if the stock cat back is 2,5" it will cause some turbulence going from 2,75" to 2,5". Correct me if I'm wrong

Any dyno numbers between the Helix cat and the "Other" cat?

Hiya,

I don't believe CARB hands out exemption orders for cats as one is only allowed to replace the cat in california after I believe 6 years or if the cat has somehow been damaged. The Helix unit definitely passes the sniffer test however, but of course if you get refereed it's technically not legal to have (as would anything else but stock).

Thanks,

Gary

I switched from another brand 3" ceramic cat to the Helix cat and I can tell you there was a noticeable seat of the pants difference. So going from a stock cat to Helix cat should be an even bigger difference.
