The problem people have is not with the limits of the cable actuated shifter but rather the actual motor rocking to the point wher you can't engage into gear.

I get a grind going into second even when I shift slow and not at WOT. Will have to try the underhood bushings and torque dampener.

If you get grind at slow lower rpm shifts then its more likely a syncho

Mine is not grinding, but is hard to shift into 2nd, especially before warm. I have a 8 step process that fixes. You may want to try.

1. Pop popcorn
2. Go Start Evo
3. Drive down road for 5 minutes skipping 2nd (1st to 3rd only)
4. Come back and turn off car
5. Get popcorn and favorite cd
6. Turn ignition to acc and play cd (eating popcorn will not affect results)
7. Push in clutch (car still off)
8. Shift as smooth, fast, hard as you want.

Using this method you will notice the grind is gone and it shifts easily!
One day, I'll try using 2nd again.

Adjust your clutch pedal so that it engages higher. Worked for me when nothing else did. I thought for sure I had a synchro issue until I did that.

Get a ETD. The Ingalls Stiffy is a good one. Really helps the 1-2 shift. Also, I have a B&M short throw and the brass underhood shifter bushings. Its still not as smooth as I'd like, but much better.

Mines the same way, and I do find myself letting my car warm up alot, just to avoid this problem.

I have been contemplating doing this to see if it would help.

You either need to press the clutch all the way in, the way a manual is suppose to be driven.
Or join a gym and take up weight training.

When its cold it'll resist going into reverse sometimes and I have to pop it in first then to reverse will work. Sometimes the very first shift to second is a little stiff but eventually loosens up.

As for shifting the evo shifting its a very different car and clutch then anything i've driven it grabs very high so the shifts are very slow and engaging its not a fast shifting car and If you do try and shift it fast you'll get ugly clunk noise.

I read a "History of the Evolution" paper on PDF. That stated that when cold all the 5-spd's did this and that it was more of an inconvienyance than a malfunction. I'll try to find a link to it for ya.

Here ya go:
"Baulking Gear change/hard to select gears
1st, 2nd and Reverse are hard to select. This is another quirk rather than a fault or problem. First, Second and Reverse gears can be hard to select when the gearbox is cold. After a fewchanges the shift should respond better and be completely free when warm. To ease initial gear selections try selecting Third before First or Reverse. If the problem persists when the gearbox has warmed then it could indicate a clutch, gearbox or a gearbox-mounting problem. Initially try changing the gearbox oil for good quality fully synthetic oil as it can improve the shifting."

I also have had severe problems with going into 2nd gear with my car (while racing). It's very freakin annoying. I may have to try the dampeners and motor mounts as well..

put some GM shyncromesh or Pennzoil Shyncromesh(yellow bottle), it cost like $6 per bottle and could fix your problem

For me is the same. I already changed the tranny fluids, the tranny (turbo triX) and the last thing what im trying is a new ACT clutch setup (SWAPPING THE RPS).

This situation is kind of frustating to me. Everybody is expectig a good quarter mile pass, but passing the gears like a truck is almost impossible.

I really dont know how Turbo Trix and all the guys out there are passing the gears so good almost above 9K rpms without any problems.
