I think its well worth the extra money consider you already have the cams out for easy installation. Helix cam gears are on special for only $249 shipped and that will give you extra ~11 + whp. What more can you ask for?

The purpose of adjustable cam gears has virtually nothing to do with idle quality.

The more duration one has to work with, the more the potential benefit to both power and torque from making adjustments to the cam timing. Someone with an HKS 280 set has far more to work with than someone with a 264 set.

And where that is concerned, it is not unusual to see an improvement along the lines of 15-20whp and 20+ ft/lbs in an already tuned EVO just from changing the cam timing.

You know what 's a waste! It's the d@mn sparking rock that I spent so much money on just so it would sit there and does NoTHING! I makes no addtional power to my car and all it does is sit there looking sparkly. Some poor bastid picked it out of a pile of dirt, polish it up and chargeed me a buttload of cash... and for what... It Makes ZERO power to my car..!!
phew..
or yeah.
now.. yeah.. cam gears are good if you like to tinker. It has potential to make power and doing so earlier in the powerband too.

The cool thing about cam gears is you can sell them for almost what you paid for them. So even though you are looking at $250 for 15HP you're really only spending $50 because when it comes time to sell them you should be able to get $200 back.

The problem with cam gears is .... just setting them one way or another wont give you a specific gain. You need to have them tuned by someone that knows what they are doing.

Lets not forget alot of people seem to have problems with them coming loose. Not sure if that is installer error or just murphy's law.

+1. Gears are good ... if you use 'em. Do some research and move -3 or so.

There is more to tuning and power than peak numbers my friend.

Does anyone have the proper setting for the camgears running the HKS 272's along with all the other mods in my signature, I am running 91 octane. I have them set at 0 and after reading these threads I am seeing different opinions.

Any help is appreciated.

From what i've seen, like posted earlier in the thread, its not worth getting gears unless you know what your doing. I have 272's w/no cam gears and i love them! perfect power band!

PS. I didn't buy gears b/c i couldn't afford it all at the time

I suggest -1 intake +4 exhaust.

Perhaps the best use of cam gears with long duration cams is to set them such that midrange torque and spool characteristics are improved without hurting top end power and in some cases, actually improving top end power.

In your case, the weak link in the chain is the lousy 91 octane fuel, which isn't especially desirable where increasing low speed cylinder pressure is concerned. That issue makes me hesitate to make suggestions to you I might make otherwise. A methanol injection kit would remedy that though . . .

I actually made the mistake of saying 91 octane, we have 93 octane here in AR. Do you run your camgears at -1 intake and +4 exhaust, and if so what were the hp gains. Were the hp gains measured on a dyno or the good ol' butt dyno.
