Cams: 272/272 with gears or no gears?????

I am getting ready to order some cams this week. I have chosen to go straight 272. But, I am getting some mixed feedback as far as cam gears are concerned. Most Vishnu followers seem to live by adding gears, whereas most ecu flash customers dont.

Anyway, my current mods are 3"tbe, boost set at 21.5, 255 walbro. Now, I do planning on adding an uicp and intake (injen), as well as possibly adding a 20g-9 later next summer. My question is, can I gain some hp with cam gears? From what I understand they simply allow you to change where the peak HP will occur, or basically give you more area under the curve; and help out with your idle.

I am just getting mixed feedback from all of the posts that I have searched under.
In addition, I dont drag race this car, but I am looking into Auto-X next season....just in case that makes a difference on peoples opinion.

Thanks for the positive feedback.

Nathan

If you plan to use a flash don't waste your money. If you are using a stand alone then they could be worth it.

Sorry, forgot to mention that. I currently have a custom dyno flash on my car. After the other parts are installed, I plan on having it reflashed.

In addition, if 272's are not the way to go, considering it is my DD, then would a 272/264 approach be better? I dont think cams are necessary needed for the 272/264 setup.

Thanks for the feedback, please keep it coming.

If you want to spend $300 for a difference of about 5hp in a different rpm range go for it, but from my experience the only thing major gears will do is give you a smoother idle.

thats what I heard as well. Gears are there to help but not by much. It just smoothes out the idle and maybe move the power band a bit. Not sure though

I wasn't telling him to do it or not or that it was worth the money or not. I was showing him that there are threads already with the info he was looking for.

yeah there is more adjustability, so i'd think it's worth it. i've heard there is 10 whp gain from adjusting it 1 degree on the cam gears.

I think +1/-1 with 272s and you'll pick up 10WHP and some more TQ, I know with 280s and +2/0 setting it's even more.

You dont need cam gears to get the car to idle right. I have straight 272's and 780cc injectors and my baby purrs like a kitten.

I've heard a couple of EVOs with straight 272s and stock gears and they idle like stock. When I do mine, I probably won't get gears. Just get a good tuning.
