Question drivetrain noise normal?

just a quick question, of course told me the noise is normal and i think maybe it is but i know no one else local with an evo to compare. this noise has been there since i bought my car which now has 22,000 miles(bought new). car has never been launched. it sounds sorta like an electrical motor that gets louder with rpms going up, quieter with rpms going down, no noise if clutch is pushed in, does it accel and decel and is most pronounced in 1st through 3rd gear, after that it isn't very noticable, can't hear it at highway speeds. hoping this is normal, i know evos are noisy cars as far as injectors, drivetrain, etc. any comments are appreciated.

How often do you change the fluids? Transfer case? Could be a tell tale TC going bye bye. hope not. you should change the fluids VERY frequently, and sooner than recommended by the dealer.

tranny whine

The noise you are hearing is definatly some sort of gearset. Generally whining is not a BAD sign as this is the noise gears make when they mesh together.

What is bad for gearsets is a grinding noise or any kind of "klink" or "chunk".

I agree with you if the noise is comming from the transmission. My TC's good-bye party started with the hum, which got louder on acceleration, and the hum turned into a tornado siren sound. louder with increase in RPM, and would quiet down on decelleration. I guess the important thing to find out here is where the noise is generating from.

well i can't really tell you that since i can't get under the car why i'm driving it. like i said the noise has been there since day 1 and hasn't gotten any louder or quieter for 22,000 miles, and it's pretty faint, can't hear it over the radio. it just worries me, that's all.

Oh, I misread this has been there since DAY1! so I would say it is exactly what HPFKevin said. turn up the radio a tad! I would venture to say this is NORMAL!

The description in the original post sounds kind of like the TOB rattle, but while the car is moving. Is this possible?

I always had the TOB rattle while sitting idle. The noise went away when I pushed the clutch in.

While the car was in motion in gears 1-3, middle RPM range, I had a similar phenomenon. Metallic, rattle-grind noise with the clutch out -- goes away with the clutch in.

normal sounds. mine does the same. it sounds like the first couple of gears have a straighter cut in the teeth which causes more noise.

I love that whinning noise.. It almost sounds like a supercharger but with a very subtle sound. I've had it since Day 1 and it's very distinct in 1st and 2nd gear.

I have that too and it fits the supercharger discription...1st and 2nd it gets louder as the rpms rise, I guess I will no longer worry about it either, schweeeet
