drivetrain noise normal?

I always had the TOB rattle while sitting idle. The noise went away when I pushed the clutch in.
While the car was in motion in gears 1-3, middle RPM range, I had a similar phenomenon. Metallic, rattle-grind noise with the clutch out -- goes away with the clutch in.

I can relate to this. My Evo VIII (March '03) has always been noisy in the drivetrain. Really noisy. When I had my clutch replaced last summer, the mechanic (who is a veteran DSM guy and owns an older Evo) said: boy you have a lot of driveline noise, maybe bad wheel bearings?
And when my friend Eric drove it at an autocross, he said, ****, you have a lot of gear noise just driving up to the start line in idle!
Anyway, I just attribute it to a car that wasn't designed to be subtle: there's a damn lot of spider gears and pinions and differentials and what not in that there transfer case, and by god we're gonna make sure you hear every one of them, so you know you got your money worth! You want quiet, you shoulda bought the bimmer M3 for twice the price.
And by the way, did you notice that you have to turn the radio up to ear damaging level to drown out road noise at 75 mph?
And did you notice that huge driveline whiplash if you abruptly let off the throttle in first gear? The throttle control isn't programmed to baby you by backing off the throttle slower than you do (like on my Focus SVT). You drop the pedal, we shut down fuel delivery right now, period, and f*** you if that wasn't intended.
This is called being directly connected to the car and the road. I don't like everything my car does, but I love it for what it is.

Evos are just randomisity noise makers. Grinds, humms, whines... As long as it's not louder than your stereo and as long as it doesn't change (get louder for example) it's usually something that is "working". Mine has been doing a hum sound at 30 mph and at 70 mph (it's quite a loud hum and consistent) but it's been there for 25k miles. Launched the car since too and so on... The sound is still there, same volume same frequency. I've just learned to live with it and put the stereo louder
So no, not every whine with the Evo is a panic attack.
