more power mid to top end 264i 272e or 272in 264e
I odered 264 272 cams and my shop guy told me i got the wrong setup. HE told me to get 272 264 So i did some research and i read that the 264 272 setup was
better. i want mid range topend power. Does it really matter which way i go or is
one better then the other. I also have stock turbo

I have 264/272 set up. It is good for the street. power comes very early and stays there. idle is good. Don't have to down shift often. But I am thinking about getting 280s for more power. 264 limits your power up top especially with 05 turbo and more mod.
I have the 272in/264ex setup. This setup is for more torque in the low to mid range. All of the evos that have been tuned here in Vegas either have 264in/272ex or straight 272's, and I have put down more torque than any of them. I've also put out more horsepower, but I think I just have a strong car. The other setup is supposed to give you better mid to top end power like you are looking for.

You can't say this one setup is better than other. they all have adavantages and disadvantages. The power curve is bit different between those two setup. But I prefer to have bigger exhaust cams for the high range. The power band moves to higher rpm range this way. mid rpm=264/264 < 272/264 < 264/272 < 272/272 <280/280=high rpm. It will also vary by adjusting cam gears and tunes... well it is not easy to say this set up is the best for the stock turbo.
Im still baffled why people are wasting their time with mix combos like that. Just get the 264s or the 272s. The 272s idle like cake without cam gears when tuned and they make more power. The gains youre going to get from 272/264 is incredbly negligible.

The 264 Intake controls idle if you are scared and teh 272 exhaust cam allows a lot of hot gas to escape. I never understood the 272 intake and 264 exhaust I would immagine it would choke on bigger turbos. I doubt you will see that great of a difference on a stock turbo, when you up the boost, things get more complicated.
For those of you who run 264/272 or 272/264. How many of you have changed you cam gears as well? I read you do not really need them with 264/264 although do need them for fine tuning if you go 272/272. Thanks!
Just go for the 272/272 combo as everyone stated. Mid to Top end power gain requires better breathing which means bigger the cams better it would be at the cost of the low end torque.. I personally think that 280s would be a overkill if you are keeping the stock turbo... I think 272 is a little over sized for the stock turbo but it would be nice to have a headroom in case you want to push it a little harder in the future....
in my readings but i can be wrong from what dave said and all i would go with 280 beacsue can get cam gears and set them down a little and your set and then you will be good if every want to go biger turbo. and as dave said he gets same low end power with all size cams and with 280 he got 15-20 more hp out of them then the 272. and with idle little copply but not bad. but if going for race car go with 280 if going for daily driver maybe want 272. more relible and not a ban in the a$$ for city
