Stock intake? Not what you think....

My IX is still bone stock. Anyways I was driving my car with my buddy when I mentioned to him that my turbo sounds a lot louder the past couple of days. The second I told him that he starts laughing like crazy. When I asked whats so funny he replyed " cause I took the filter out" so after hearing that I kind of got pissed off. My question is will running without a filter cause any damage to the turbo or motor since it's sucking in unfiltered air? turns out I have been driving without a filter for a week, is that bad?

its bad but its worst if you drove on streets that have a lot of dust, what you should do is change the oil filter and oil as soon as you can and tell your friend not to an .....hole!!

it depends....assuming you still have your maf on, it will block most of the big particles thats going in your turbo...but over time, it will wear it down...you'll get bad mpg and you have to clean your maf a lot.....just get a new filter to be on the safe side...it's only a few $$$$....

btw I have 10k miles on the car and stock filter. I put the stock filter back in but it's a little dirty, is it good enough reason to put a K&N drop-in filter?

To be safe I would change the oil again. There are many cars that run without a filter, namely race cars, or sports cars from the 1950's, but they change the oil more often.

I would kick my friend if he did that, stupid thing to do.

don't worry, changing the oil is not going to help anything the oiling system and the airflow system are seperated and don't mix.

your oil has nothing to do with your air filter...unless it's spitting lots of sludge to your intake pipe...that's what a oil catch can is for....

You guys beat me to it, I'm reading this and I'm thinking WTF does changing your oil have to do with your air filter?

Nothing.

Take your airbox off and look to see if there is a lot of dust in the intake pipe to the turbo. If it's pretty clean I wouldn't worry. If there is a lot of dust, I don't know what to tell you. It's probably fine. You might want to take the inlet pipe off the turbo and clean it out with some soapy water to keep anymore crap from going through the turbo.

Tell your friend he's an idiot and not to do you anymore "favors". I'm suprised your car didn't run like crap. The nine's MAF must be less sensitve to turbulence than the VIII's.

I'd punch that guy squarely in the face. He touched YOUR car?

Yes, power production and turbo noise will increase. An Evo 9 motor rebuild will cost you at the very least 3k installed. For a 4 horsepower increase thats a hell of an expense for absolutely NOTHING.

Anyways....55 bucks for an oil change?

Bro, go to Costco, Sams, BJ's or even WalMart and buy a case of 6 qt's of Mobil 1 10w-30 or 5w-20 for winter (not recomended but it makes it easier for my motor to warm up in the super cold) and buy a PuroLator oil filter from AutoZone for 6 bucks. Total investment, 32 bucks....Just a thought.
