They were probably planning on taking the head all the way off. At that it's definitely an all day job and would cost $1100.

The cam and head studs install is fairly easy if you know how to work on cars. i can do a basic cam install on the evo doing it the way i think it should be done is without that tensioner tool, just pull the tbelt off, in about two hours. If you do the head studs i recommend to just pull the head off and do it, this will add almost another two hours total but it will give you the piece of mind knowing it is done right. There are many people who do the "one by one " method without a problem so it is up to you. Good luck and if you have any quesrions feel free to PM me.

GO to this link right here : http://www.otctools.com/frames-newcatalog.php3Type in Belt tensioner in the search bar. Scroll down and go the first one I believe its 6001 and that is the one you want. I bought mine from here last year for 8.55 plus shipping. I believe you have to call and place your order on the phone. Hope that helps.

you do not need to pull the head to do studs.. the arp studs are not torgue'd into the block.. the studs only get screwed in figer tight.. the torque comes from the nut..
and bleed the lifters.. pm me if you need info on bleeding.. its real easy..

BTW I am doing headstuds at the same time.

I would not recommend doing head studs at all. Do a small search and you will find that people had bigger failure rate with them than with out them. No stock EVO head studs have failed so far on sock turbo. Furthermore, the one by one way is wrong and in some cases will cause a leak.

Again search and you will know what I mean.

I'm having my cams done in a couple days as well. Are you replacing your head gasket as well? I'm wondering if I should while having it done...

Well, a local guy here in town wanted to charge me $890 for the cam install, studs, head gasket. And the bad part about it he works at the Mitsubishi dealership and this was supposed to be a side job. He might as well have told me to come by during normal business hours for that price. Guess he needs to pay some bills or something....not on my dime though.

Here is a little info on bleeding the lifters
http://www.joe250.com/cars/evo/camshaftinstall.htm

AMS sells the timing tensioner tool for $34

Just as a note, check the part numbers on the cams to make sure they are correct once you receive them. I didn't and ended up being without my car for a week because I received cams for a Talon/GSX

If you are pulling the head to do studs then i would do the head gasket as well. If just doing the cams then no you don't need to.
