For those who installed cams.

I am getting ready to do my cam install following the EvoMoto write-up and was wondering if those of you that have done their own if they had anything to add to it that they found was easier. It says that you have to use the timing belt tool or it takes hours longer, is there a less expensive way than purchasing a $90 tool? Thanks for any help guys. BTW I am doing headstuds at the same time.

I would like to know how it goes for you...I am planning on cams/gears in about 4 weeks.
did headstuds with the head still on and it was a piece of cake. follow the writeup on evolutionm and it takes about an hour to replace all of them with studs.

doing 10.5 hotside and the egt tap for the xedesmart in 3 weeks, but have a buddy that has a 4 post lift so it will be cake

I did my own cams over christmas break and didn't use the tool. Who knows how long it would have taken had i used it, but it most definatly wouldn't have been as long. Knowing what i know now, i bet i could get the job done in an evening with the tool, and a full day, with out it. That's assuming EVERYTHING went perfectly. Either way, it actualy isn't that hard of a job to do. I had a few people help me out (mostly just sat around and drank my beer).

Thanks guys. Is there anyplace else that sells it or just EvoMoto. It seems like it shouldn't be that expensive, doesn't look like theres alot to it . I'll let everyone know how it goes. I'm still waiting on some parts though.

Nice, the only place around here that does this kind of work quoted me $1100 for cams and headstuds.

I watched a friend of mine do mine, and he ties the belt up with "zip ties" on top, and put the bottom on. BE CAREFUL about making sure the oil pump balance shaft is in SYNC! mine was "out of phase"180 degrees, EVEN though the marks LINED up! I will give you my mechanics number if you get in trouble. Good luck!

You can make your own tool with (IIRC) M8 threaded rod which you can buy for about $3. from Mcmaster Carr. If you don't have a welder use two nuts, lock them together at the end of the rod section and put a socket wrench on the nut to tighten it into the threaded bore that levers against the tensioner. Or, remove the tensioner and reload it in a 6" vice.

I agree. even the stealership here quoted $500 for cams and headstuds is a piece of cake. anyone can do those if you have a torque wrench

If you have access to the proper tools its a pretty doable install if you have halfway decent mechanical skill
