EVO8....crank walk??

Ive been reading the board for awhile now. Ive seen some people having difficulty going into 2nd gear, from what ive been reading on some other sites a sign of crankwalk(difficulty going into gears). Is there still some crankwalk issues on the newer 4G63's, or is it been addressed.

This coming from 4G63 newbie.

Trust me, no crankwalk on your car. Evolution III and under, same motors that are on the 2g eclipse were the problem (faulty oil nozzles on the block would get clogged with time) and took a while to notice, wasn't something that happened with a new 2g, that's why most people were f*cked because mitsu wouldn't cover the default because often the manufacturer's warranty would expire before the symptoms occured.

New, car, take it back! let them figure it out.

Not quite sure exactly what you meant but just to clarify:
Crankwalk was mostly found in 95-99 DSMs. These motors were 7 bolt instead of the previous 6 bolt motor ( pre 95). There was no found rhyme or reason behind this. There were many theories but none were found to hold water fully. Crankwalk happened more on the 97-99 motors than it did the 95-96. The odds of the EVO havng a chronic crankwalk problem are small. This is because they did little to change the EVO motor from the past few years and the previous EVO's have had no problems with it. Saying that its not possible because they are new cars isnt true at all......there were reported cases of crankwalk on 99 GSXs with less then 30,000 miles. The reason the problem was never solved (i.e. a recall) is because the cost for Mitsu would have been more (new motors for 10's of thousands of cars) than dealing with the few lawsuits they faced on account of not fixing it. If the motor went and the car was under warranty however there was nothing they could do but fix it unless they could pawn it off on the car being modified. Hope this helped.

One interesting thing I heard on a different board from someone working at Mitsu: 's internal corporate theory on the initial cause of crankwalk is that some of the clutches were maladjusted during assembly at the Normal, IL plant. Of course no one knows for sure what causes it, and Mitsu has never claimed any responsibility.

I would suspect the build quality coming out of Japan will be better on the Evo, and this won't be an issue

Maybe our 10 bolt is better

6-bolt and 7-bolt refers to the number of bolts that hold the flywheel to the crank. It does not refer to the number of main cap bolts.

1G DSMs also got crankwalk. But fewer people detect it because there is no critical engine sensor to be chewed up by a trigger plate on the crank.

Let's squash this now...CW is not what's happening.. You'd know it if your engine failed.

Stiff shifting into 2nd is more than likely due to tight clearences and people not depressing the clutch completely.

I agree. Crankwalk is highly unlikely.

Transmissions need to break-in, too. After I get a rebuild, the tranny is quite chunky when shifting. But give it a while and it really smooths out.

All the reports from DSM owners I have heard about the Evo tranny is that it is fantastic.

Like I said, no, not only 2nd gen Eclipses. 1st gen Eclipses and Talons got it too. In fact, any engine can get crankwalk. Miatas were known for it, too. But Mazda fixed the issue with their engine.

I got crankwalk on my 97's stock engine. Then I built a 1991 engine. I forgot to align the thrust bearing halves when I installed them. I got crankwalk on that engine, too. But I caught it at just 100mi. I finally ended up modifying the bearing to give the thrust surface a direct oil feed from the center channel in the bearing. Trust me, you are going to be hard-pressed to beat me in crankwalk-knowledge.

Yep, not to mention Josh's modified thrust bearing is still going strong after 2 years
