I won't deny the 9 head is impressive but I don't think it warrants the hit you would take trading a car in. For the amount of money you lose on the difference, tax, etc. you could do some really nice things to your current car.
The Autronic SM4 has been used on more than one IX rally car already, and there are Autronic dealers in practically every state. The SM4 PnP should be released mid-march or thereabouts for those not capable of doing a splice installation.

Shiv (at least) has said that it should be possible for the XEDE to control MIVEC which means you COULD run a MIVEC head on an 8. It's just a matter of someone actually doing it. Not sure if they changed the block to accomodate the new Evo 9 head. My gut says they didn't. Same block, different head.

All i see is a diffrent cam gear on the intake cam and an extra sensor in the mivec head, the head look identical from the evo 8.

The spark plug housings are changed, the coolant passages were moved closer to the cylinders, and there's one or 2 other things I think.

I'd like to run a IX head on my VIII without the MIVEC. From what I've seen, there may be enough "improvement" to significantly lower the detonation thresh hold. Is it worth it? Guess that depends on how close you are riding the line on your tune, and if there really is any headroom to be gained.

Thats a good point, but considering the $ involved it might not be"worth it". However, if you have have your motor apart (whether it blew up, timing belt went, etc), just throwing on a IX head could be cost effective and a nice upgrade! I just couldnt see taking off my perfectly good VIII head and putting on a IX like that, but yes, its crossed my mind!

The block is different on the IX - it has additional coolant passages that go into the head
