Evo IX Turbo vs VIII Turbo

Ive got the chance to get a IX turbo for a good price. What kinda of gains should I expect from the IX turbo? No other changes just the turbo difference.
Im trying to weigh the cost for the benefits.

very minimal. As David Buschur said you need at least stage 4 before you get the 9 turbo.

No, that was the 20g-9, not the stock 9. Jim, you don't put your car in your sig or in your profile, so I never know what you have (03, 04, 05, mods, model, what?). If you have an 03/04, then you will see significant gains with the IX, because you'd gain from both the 10.5 hotside and the larger compressor cover - ~30whp if not more. This may still be dependent on your other mods (or lack thereof) in order to fully utilize the benefits of the new turbo. I can tell you that I would love to have one if I could get one cheap, but don't forget you need to make sure you get the turbo outlet pipe with it (little black pipe that connects to the LICP) as well as the oil and water lines.

There I fixed that problem Warr.

Well the turbo is coming off of a car at a shop where I'm good friends with the owner, and its getting replaced with a gt35 so I think the water lines and everything will come with it.

I want more power then what I got right now, and I like to stay relatively low on mods, and keep the car still looking rather stock and clean. I would like to get the 20g 9, but I want to see some 1/4 times and traps with it before I would get it. I will get some 272s eventually also, and I think the IX turbo on an VIII with 272 would be a very nice dd car.

Buy the IX turbo. Then hold onto it for a while until you start seeing some 1/4 mile times with a IX 20g. If you like them, then send the IX turbo off to Buschur for the modifications. You'll still have the 8 turbo installed this whole time and you won't have any down time.

i would think the turbo would spool just as fast as the 8 turbo if equipped on our cars

So im guessing the gains are minimal, I know the cost to send your VIII turbo in for the 20g-9 is 900, but whats the cost to get a IX turbo converted to the 20g?

No, but your post implied that the turbo was the reason it spooled quicker.

Do you think with this setup you will keep the daily driver feel or are you turning the car into a more drag/strip car?

the larger diffuser design of the 9 housing is what accounts for fast spool... however the low end torque increase is due to both faster spool AND mivec.

don't think the gains are minimal... however the only way to know is to get an 8 dynotune tehn get a 9 turbo throw it on the 8 and repeat. no one will ever do this. i'd say hte gains that the 9 has over the 8 are all due to the turbo. mivec does not contribute to a top end number. and since people are tuning more power out of the 9 ecus it can't all be due to the ecu either.
