Here a little hint: you are not supposed to shift faster than the synchros can function. Cars with synchros are supposed to be smoothly shifted, unlike cars with dog-box trannys where you can slam through the gears. If you keep shifting faster than your synchro can work you are going to grind them and ultimately damage them.
If you are experiencing grinding at higher RPMs even when shifting smoothly your synchros may be going bad. To fix it would involve taking out the entire tranny and replacing the synchros.
To help you tranny shift smoother and faster (and prolong the life of your synchros) use either Pennzoil Synchromesh or BG Synchroshift in the tranny. Don't use these oils in the TC or rear diff.
Finally ... try doing a search these issues have been addressed many times before ...

I have a IX with 13k miles. Just dropped it off at the dealer after doing a drive around with one of the techs. My problem was as follows.
2nd to 3rd gear shift would produce a noticeable and slightly annoying clunk. First to second would do the same but much softer.
Recently neutral to reverse would clunk and grind. If I switched from 1st gear to neutral, let out clutch, then push in clutch to reverse would not grind.
The tech thinks its the syncros. Apparently fifth and reverse share syncros. All covered under warranty.
My car is completely stock.

Mine grinds as well, damnit. As soon as I get my clutch, pump, injectors and finish dynotuning it's going stock and I'm bringing her back for a new tranny. There is some rumor the 5th gear grind is done on purpose. Mine's SILK below about 3k into fifth, anything higher and it's grinds a bit. I've got 3k on the clock of my Evo9 RS. Seems a little too common to be an accident. Either Mitsu is pulling an 06 STI (plastic rear trans mount, tricky a$$holes) or a recall is in order.
The mods also have to warrant the problem. Blown motor with a GT35R, NOT GONNA WARRANTY. 5th gear grind with an exhaust...NO WAY they can turb down your claim. Be more persistant with your claims. We get warranty issues cleared all the time on lightly modded cars. The mods have to DIRECTLY affect the defect you want replaced! If you have a race clutch, you're prolly screwed. But a 4k mile car with a grinding 5th gear is HARD ISSUE to fall out of warranty.
Also SEVERAL problems with local Evos not having the correct amount of fluid from Mitsu and dealers aren't catching it. 3 local Evos I have personally fixed with low trans levels BRAND NEW. Check your fluid level, if it's low add some Redline MTL or MT90 (MT85?) and seem if it corrects the problem.
