Just wanted to post a question. I went to Mobil 1 to get an oil change and after a week I threw a rod out of the motor. It looks like my rod bearing is hanging out of it right now. The sales guy offered a 12.99 oil cleaner that I said Ok to becasue I was getting my car tuned the following Saturday. I havent checked the oil pump yet and it may be locked up. Not sure though. Or it could be that my boost was spiking and caused extra load on the motor and couldnt handle it. Its water under the bridge now but was curious if anyone new about oil cleaner being possibly destructive to our motors. Thanks

all i could say is something might have blocked an oil passage to the rod bearing.. or the pump just failed... since i have heard there has been probs with these pumps..

Why would you add oil cleaner when most oils have detergents in them already?

So I am assuming you used an additive to your oil, not sure if that would cause it, but possible. I do know if you had a boost spike you could have possibly experienced some detonation and let me tell you detonation is very tough on your rod bearings.

It was just a bottle of oil cleaner. I didnt foresee any potential harm in it but figured why not. I would like to assume it was too much load so I'll know the oil pump is still good. Maybe I should upgrade my oil pump.

If you are using synthetic oil, there really shouldn't be anything to "clean".

yeah I know, it was just a piece of mind for 12.99! LOL I am just wanting to mkae sure that the oil cleaner had no negative effect on the pump per say. Does anyone know someone at mitsubishi that could ask if oil cleaner is added would ruin the pump?

the boost was temporarily done by me. I was to get tuned the following day I blew my motor. Tough luck.

I highly doubt the oil cleaner would effect the oil pump. Once you tear into the motor, you'll see what really happened. Good luck and sorry about the motor.

Thanks. I almost want to say I am happy about it because know I can basically build whatever I want. I just wasnt anticipating the cost at this point in time.

If your engine has a fatal malfunction immediately following a procedure not recommended in the service manual or even needed, then I would say that it is VERY LIKELY the cause.

First of all, since the procedure was done by someone else, you have no idear what they did e.g., added wrong agent, skipped or forgot a step, etc.

Hope you find the cause and resolve this as painless as possible

This is more than likely the problem.. you added more boost untuned, detonation killed the bearings.
