clunk noise when shifting to 2nd
well, i have 800 miles on my evo, and today i decided to give it some gas and shift fast, but from 1st gear to 2nd, i hear a cluck noise, and i can feel it. i havent figured out where its coming from yet, but it doesnt sound normal. does anyone else have this problem? it only seems to happen shifting from 1st to second. im gana take it to the dealership to get this sorted out. in the mean time, give me ANY suggestions you may have about this. thanks,

This is purely conjecture on my my part, but...
The 1-2 shift on a WRX "clunks." Supposedly this is from transmission slap. Maybe this is a common symptom of AWD cars? Like I said, just an idea. On the WRX, stiffer rear diff bushings are supposed to help. I'm sure someone will have a better idea than me, though

i think its normal, mine does the same, but other cars ive driven also do the same (s2000, supra turbo). as long as it goes in gear/stays in gear and doesnt grind its prolly normal. have the dealer check it out though.
After I hit roughly 800 or so miles at the most random times when I'm shifting from 1st to 2nd it feels as though I could push the clutch in and just barely touch the shift knob and it wants to "pop" or "click" straight out of 1st. I'm not talking about driving hard or anything. It's just so random. It doesn't necessarily happen when the car is cold or hot in paticular. I can't really describe it. Think of a catapult. If the shift knob were the throwing arm on a catapult then when you push the clutch in it feels as though with even the slightest touch on the knob it's popping itself into neutral.
Thoughts?

What kind of noise do you guys hear? Like a metal ripping / scratching noise?
On my Evo, the gearbox is a little rough when cold, but becomes smooth after the oil in there is warm. It's also a matter of how old it is. It needs a little running in.
However, if you change gears REALLY fast, you'll be going faster than the box can and you'll hear a noise. Try changing slightly slowlier and find out how fast you should be changing gears.
(OT: On the Subaru Impreza (I have one), the gearbox is ridiculously slow and particularly fragile.)

Try slipping the clutch alittle more. The clunking is probablly the rear diff. If you let the clutch out too fast power tranfers from tranny to drive shaft then to rear diff.
I use too do it alot from going to a fwd car to awd car.
In a wrx the more you clunked the faster the tranny failed, since
you would be shocking the tranny all the time. just my 02cts

Back on topic please.
For me Claudius, it's not the clunk....it's the fact that it feels as though the gearbox wants to jump out of first gear sometimes when I push the clutch and then grab the stick. It's like it springs out of 1st. This doesn't happen going to or from any other gear and it by no means happens all the time or even consistently in any way.

the noise seems to be not as loud. in fact, in a fit of rage last night i gave it hell, and it didnt do it at all. so i think it may have been a break-in related thing.
matt: i think its ok now, im ganna take it in just to check today. in a few hundred miles were starting to mod this thing. anthony has a bunch of neat gadets for it so the we can disconnect the engine managment system whenever i take it in to the dealership. il try to get up to indi soon, but school is ganna be a bear these last 5 weeks... so i dunno. i let you know.

well, i took the head mitsu rep for a ride to show him the clunck, we determined it wasnt the spare because we took it out, and it still made the noise. he said hed have to call some guy higher up in mitsu that would know what was causing this, and what to do about it. he also said " im not ganna blow smoke up your but saying well fix it or just start throwing parts on it, because mitsu knows these cars are ganna have some problems, and they are gana be sticklers when it comes to this type of thing, but no matter what, well make sure either nothing is wrong, or it will be fixed." i dunno what to think about all that, but if something is broke, it better be fixed no charge.

to have them look into it?
