Sputtering issue solved!

I posted a while back about my sputtering issue. Sputtered under partial throttle, full throttle it was fine (and made full boost). Idled kind of irratic also.

Well I checked the plugs, wires (a few times), switched BOVs, checked electrical connections, etc.

So after all that....and the problem still occured I thought about the MAF. Now I have had my K&N drop in since Oct. My experience with K&N filters is that you will eventually need to clean the MAF after installing one because of the oil. But none of my previous cars had this problem if the MAF was dirty.

Finally today I got a chance to pull off the airbox/MAF and just what I expected; it was dirty.......VERY DIRTY to be exact. Oil, grime, etc. Got some electrical parts cleaner, sprayed it down until dirt was gone.....let dry and reinstalled. I also pulled the - terminal to reset everything......and voila! The car sputters no more and it idles a lot better than before. Needless to say I am very happy!

I just figured I would share my experience for anyone that may come across this problem in the future.

maybe this is the reason why some of older evos behave in such a way. Does not cost anything to check it over.

I think it was more related to resetting the ECU than anything else. Why don't you post after a hundred miles or so.

I'm sorry I forgot to add...I TRIED resetting the ECU when the problem started. Once it was done I got into the car and IMMEDIATELY had the sputtering. Nothing changed with just the ECU reset.

So in short.....it was the MAF. Drove a few hundred miles this weekend....and still good to go!
