the runner closest to, or the next one over from the timing belt cover. These two cylinders have been known to run the leanest (most people recommend the second runner over from the timing cover) on the 4G63.

If you drill it just right, you can get the probe installed without having to cut a whole in the upper heat shield, and still not hit the head.

in theory, the closer to the head the better, to cut down on any ambient heat losses and lower EGT readings than actual. But how much heat can you lose in a couple inches???? 1-2"'s either way on your probe location may not even be measurable on the typical EGT gauge. Be careful, the runner surface is not perfectly perpendicular to the head. It is fairly easy to have your probe angled, even if you drill it in the right spot, if it's angled the end sticking up may still interfere with the heat shield or head. I thought I had everything laid out perfect, but my drill was angled towards the head due to the uneven surface of the runner, and I've got about 1/4" clearance between the probe and head when it should have been closer to 3/4".

Talking

I drilled my 1/8" npt hole in the number 1 runner, 2" from the head. I had the exhaust manifold off the head when drilling.
I use a sensor connection probe that lasts ~20k miles. The probe is way better quality probe than the Defi, Blitz, Greeddy, etc. probes.
