Evo IX Gearbox

Hi Folks,

I've got a question about the gearbox of the Evo IX-Modells.

The Evo IX has now 6 gears, as you all may know.
I heard that the gearbox has still the same size.
(tighter -> more susceptiple)

--> is the new (6gear) gearbox less robust/strong than the 5-gear-version?
(reputedly: ralliteams replaced the 6gear box because it wasn't strong enough)

--> did anybody make any experiences with the gearbox in combination with a tuned engine? (>350bhp@flywheel)

or do you think the new gearbox is as stable/robust than the "old" one?

thank you

(excuse my odd english )

the mr's have always had a 6th gear...the rs-gsr never has had one...it comes down to preference whether you want the gear and some other goodies for about 4k more...

cheers

ok.

in europe, we don't have the option to choose between these models.
there's only a six-speed-version.

other suggestions?

IIRC Works noted that the 6 speed holds less fluid. I could see this increasing the chance of heat/ wear issues.

Yes the 6 speed is slightly weaker than the 5 speed but only on gears 3-6. 1 and 2 on the 6 speed are nearly indestructable and are stronger than the 5 speeds. Read this entire thread for answers and pay close attention to what GEARS says

My 6 spd is still shifting like butter after over 7 open track events in one year, 25,000 street miles and almost 400 flywheel hp. Still on original clutch too. I just changed the fluid and it was fine.

If you drive the car like an idiot, things will break.

that's what the external heat exchanging fins on the case are for.

You can always fab a gearbox cooler, if it was a regularly roadraced car. Porsche did it on the 930, and its funny that no other changes (between cars equipped with a gearbox cooling system and those without) the tranny cooler equipped cars had a higher torque rating.

I believe it was mentioned in the above link, though if not I can find it later.

Cheers

I had looked into this for my MR and i couldn't find one. Does anyone know of one custom or Evo specific?

OT: Now you got me thinking what makes the fluid circulate? It obviously would have to circulate in order for fluid to go through the cooler? An add on pump? Just a random thought...

Custom, and it circulates with a pump. I had one on a WRX gearbox (was a fairly easy install on that) that a buddy and I devised. Expect to spend about 600-700 on parts and then whatever labor. I havent looked at my MR case close enough to see how much of a pain its going to be. Anyone have an exploded diagram of an EVO tranny?

This post makes me laugh because my gearbox grenaded 3 months after saying this.

I am installing a gearbox cooler on my 6spd and will do a full write up with part#'s and photos soon.
