I've noticed that a few of the more "stock" evo owners have tightened the wastegate turnbuckle enough to combat the boost-taper demon. My only problem is, I don't know my @ss from a hole in the ground -- mechanically speaking, that is --- and I have only a vague idea as to what this procedure entails.
SOOOOOOooooo . . . . . could someone post pics of the wastegate (yes, I know where THAT is) turnbuckle (DON'T know what that is), and explain to me what I need to do? Please, oh Evo-literate?
Whoever does . . . . may you live to be a thousand years old!

You don't need to mess with it, man. In fact, PLEASE don't mess with it, especially on your IX. It is not something that most people should be doing - it's just for fixing a really big problem if one exists.
Focus on mods that actually remove the taper rather than trying to mess with the WGA (flash or mbc). It requires you to remove the radiator anyway unless you can get past all the heatshields and are nimble enough to loosen the nut, remove turnbuckle, turn it, re-attach it (requires applying compressed air to the wastegate hose that will be tough to get to), re-tighten the nut, then hope you didn't tighten it too much.

Well, Warr --- Looks like you're going to live to be a thousand!!
You've got a point --- that does sound like a PITA process, just for a marginal decrease in taper --- and you're description of the steps certainly puts it out of MY capability range. Ok. Cool.
Hmmmmmmm . . . . . Let me ask you a question then (if you don't mind) . . If one was hesitant to obviously scrap the warranty on their evo by adding a MBC or TBE, and wanted to "Stealthily" deal with a minor issue such as this, would you lean to the WORKS P2R Brain-flash, since it can maintain boost response within the confines of the ECU?
Just curious if that would be a viable from a "less is more" warranty standpoint.

Yes, tightening the WGA is not one of those free DIY mods for a few more ponys. It's just a poor mans way to keep the damd thing closed on 03 - 05s once they reach a certain whp (290ish).
Keep in mind the factory WGA diaghram on the VIII can only handle 19 psi and what happens to your car when your WGA goes? Perhaps everthing else goes with it.
For 03 - 05 owners I think just purchacing an aftermarket one designed to handle excessive pressures would be safer.
I can't say anything about your IX because I know little of your setup, but I would doubt your WGA is cracking open.

All flashes can reduce taper using the stock boost control solenoid, so the Works is not special in this regard. It just costs more.
The flash is so hard to detect, and most dealerships don't even know how or that they CAN detect one, so getting one is pretty safe - safter than a full exhaust or MBC. So, you could get away with a nice Buschur cat-back that has the new Bullet muffler, a K&N drop-in (or leave stock), then a nice Dynoflash mail-in for $299. That would put you over 300whp while remaining very stealthy and within the confines of the warranty.

Warr --- that's not a bad suggestion at all! (And I appreciate the information, C6C6CH3vo, very enlightening.)
Warr --- are you serious about over 300whp with a catback, drop-in, and a flash? I'm thinking about doing just that, but forgive me if I'm a little skeptical about passing 300whp with less than a grand in warranty-preserving mods. Surely you must mean a custom tune --- am I right?

No, I mean exactly what I said: a cat-back and mail-in Dynoflash (filter isn't important). This is not uncommon for IXs. With a full exhaust and MBC, you can hit 330whp on a mail-in. With a custom flash, it goes as high as 355whp in some cases. Don't sell your IX short...they are disgustingly fast. You haven't seen all the huge power numbers and track times from the IXs on here?

Wow --- you're right about those times. Hmmmm . . . you and Al and Dave wouldn't be flying into Northwest Arkansas to tour the Wal-Mart Home Office would you? A chance to get that custom tune with those mods would be awesome!
Seriously --- thanks for the sound advice Warr, you've got my vote for mayor of Evotown.

Errrr - that's only 14 hours or so of driving? I'm a lazy @ss (honestly), but if it were Kansas City, I'd be there with beer hats and bratwursts for everyone! The mail-in mods are nice, though -- at least until we can coax you guys out to Wal-Mart country (NWArkansas) for some Bo and Luke Duke action.
Had no idea that any part of Arkansas was 900 miles from Houston. I thought Arkansas was adjacent to Texas. I guess Houston is way south and you are way North. Maybe Dallas would have been a bit closer, but there's no tuning trip there. There's nowhere in your vicinity that I can imagine getting a tuning trip, hah.

It is!
It's just that we have no sense of direction (or of how to make a straight road), and we have to pass through -- yawn -- Oklahoma to get to Texas from the NW corner (where I'm at). Anyway, I'm sure if tested it wouldn't be 14, but more like 10 hours to the outskirts of Houston. But wouldn't you want to drive 3.5 hours North to KC rather than 10? Seriously --- Johnsonville Brats on me. Think about it.
