Lifters ticking?

All,

I was a meet yesterday with some EVO buddies. Someone started their EVO and I immediately heard the dreaded lifter tick. I was quite surprised and went over to him and asked him what year and how many miles he had on his car. As it turns out, it's an 04 with 29k miles on it. I was taken aback! How in the world would a car so "new" have ticking lifters already? I've owned several cars in the past and I wouldn't expect this until around 60k or so miles on the motor.

I advised the guy to take it to the dealer and have them overall his valvetrain under warranty.

Any thoughts?

This is the closest quick inet article search I could come up with. I've got to go reference a lash adjuster part picture as I'd love to see the actual design for the EVO, but hopefully this might help.

No cams. He said the ticking started 8k miles ago.

Nope. I've heard lifters for many years and can spot them immediately.

Do you know what type of oil he uses? I know with DSMs, people have reported changes in lifter tick relating to what type of oil they use.

I recently changed my oil and the noise went down a little, I use 10w 30 mobile 1 synthetic and my cams have been in for about 2 1/2 weeks

I wonder how many lifter-tick threads there are? It's normal or common during oil warm-up.

I had lifter-tick starting ~1-2K miles after installing cams, then it seemed to stop. After I did a 2.3 build with Crower springs/retainers a couple of months ago my valve-train is very smooth with no ticking. The whole engine is smoother and quieter.

When my engine is cold and warming up i get "lifter tap." After the car is warmed up its gone. Sometimes when I use the AC and the car loses idle it starts again. It started back around 3000k. Now im at 15k and ive learnt to live with it.
