I dont know if the damper is going to help but it is worth a try. Balance shafts in the DSM would were removed mainly for three reasons. All have been mentioned. To eliminate the balance shaft belt so it can not break and take out the timing belt. So the shafts dont lock up and rip the timing belt to shreads (this is very common). And final to reduce rotating mass.

Being the shafts are rotating 2X engine speed and they are not balanced they beat the pi$$ out of the bearings causing them to spin. What happens next 95% of the time is it locks up causing the timing belt to get all the teeth ripped out. I have a 1G with a 6 bolt where the bearing spun while driving. I became lucky in that I was an hour away from home and luckily the bearing fell to the pan and the shaft just spun where the bearing was. It sounded like someone put marbles in the head.

I have removed balance shafts out of over 20 engines at a shop I was at and never had a major vibration problem like you mention on here. Usually you get vibration at idle and around 4K other than that it is not that noticable. I just purchused my EVO and this winter I will be removing mine. I hate them, I wish it was an option on all the new cars. Useless weight.

well guys, every one line up to kick me in my butt. the bolt that mounts the engine dampner to the strut tower was just loose enough that at high rpms it rattle the heck out of the car. two wrenches and five minutes latter i was back on the road all smiles. thanx for all the imput and feedback guys.

No real noticible vibration increase with mine either.
