I know the reason for using a torque plate while honing the engine. The purpose is to mimic the head being on the block so that there will be no distortion of the upper cylinder walls while honing. In short, it is insuring that the cylinder is straight.

My question is...how many people use this method? (for those of you who have built your own motor) Even the major engine builders AMS, Buschur ect. Do they use this technique? If so, where can you aquire a torque plate as they are engine specific.

These are the ones I see everyone using. If you have time find somebody who has one and is willing to do the engine work, because they plates are between 300-400 dollars.

Buschur, AMS, TurboTrix, Road Race, Enginetecs, Polk Performance and many more of the dsm guys will have all the parts it takes to correctly work on a 4g63.

Wow....thanks. The prices are between $460-$520. I knew they were going to be expensive but that is way to much to justify the cost for building one engine.

 

Generally you need it the most when boring because there is more material being removed. When honing to break the glaze, you won't be removing that much material.

I would have to go back and re-read the ross pistons installation guide. I was pretty sure they recommended using a torque plate when honing. I could be wrong however.

 

Yes they are used for the honing step. They are not used when boring. When boring they stop about .002-.003 from the final bore size, then hone the rest out. I had my machine shop measure the bore distortion with and without the torque plate. He measured almost .001 difference.

Sorry guys... it was a long day of wrenching, and I didn't realize that I'd not finished my post until now.

I'd intended to say "I was about to jump in on the fact that torque plates are used for "boring" the cylinders..." as well as honing by many shops these days.

Do you know what that actually means? It isn't about piston bores.


If people are building engines at home I have a BHJ R torque plate that I will rent, $50. 2 week maximum, $500 deposit required until it is returned to me, user pays shipping both ways.

 

No kidding sherlock.
It's just another step towards building a precision motor.


Magnafluxing isn't a bad idea either.

at least I know slow boy uses this technique when honing. I am just letting them build the short block and I will assemble the rest and do the install.

 

Guys, a question. Is it mandatory to use a gasket (i know it's recommended) when boring the engine using a torque plate? So i would need to sacrifice a head gasket for this? Say if i purchased a vulcan ring gasket, then that gasket won't be able to be reused as the rings has been crushed by the torque plate. And it's quite costly to sacrifice a head gasket each time a bore is done.
