Warm-up Noise

Everytime I start up my car I usually give it about 2-3 minutes to warm up. Around the 3 minute mark I always hear two knocking sounds. It seriously sounds like someone knocking on the trunk lid twice, and its always tricking me..lol .. After those sounds everything is cool though. Anyways, one time I was in a rush and started it up and let it run for a minute before I took it out..When I put it in first and started going I heard the two knocks even louder but from the front of the car this time. I have no idea what it can be...Help?

I suppose it could be hydraulic lifters or the exhaust because I never hear it when I'm driving..only during warm-up...So it should be normal then either way right?

The lifter noise isn't a knocking sound, and on my evo it's not audible unless you're outside the car with the hood popped. The lifter/valvetrain noise sounds like someone typing fast on an old typewriter.

I've heard the rear diff noise also (is it a problem, or just a normal LSD sound? ), it sounds like a 'clunk' in the trunk on a fast shift.

From what you've described, I would take my car to the dealer and let them hear the noise (of course, Murphy's Law states that cars won't make weird noises at the dealership :-)

Well.. Took it to the dealership..they couldn't duplicate the noise. They checked the exhaust and a few other things but found no problems. I'm gonna make an appointment and leave it with them one time over night so maybe they hear the noise in the morning or something after it's cooled for a long period.

im thinking it something that warms up under the hood and pops/creaks as it expands, like the heat sheild on the exhaust manifold. that would be my best guess. i have valve noise, but its more of a bunch of small clicks then two loud knocks.

ive got that same problem, its coming from the under the car in the rear. somewhere around the rear differential, only on cold starts. i took it to the dealership and they had no idea what it was. Mine happens around a min and 15sec, like clockwork. i dont understand how anything would be moving back there until the car starts moving right? but other than that no problems with it. maybe its just another unexplainable noise that cars have.

I get the same noise. Right after the 2 pops, the car starts to get warmed up.

You have documentation on this? To me, the 60wt is nearly twice as thick as it needs to be. Especially to cool the turbo bearings.

Indeed, where did you hear / how did you determine that 10w30 is not the optimal engine oil? I've been running 10w30 since purchase 4 mos ago.

What are others here using?
