ARPs with cams or not?

I know they are only about $100, but has anyone had a problem with their head lifting on stock studs? How many PSI before issues?

Just wondering if it's really necessary for 21psi and under 400whp.

My head lifted at the track boosting only 23 psi. now I have ARP

Good to know, thanks. I'm planning to put them in when I get my cams but I wanted to see if anyone was having any issues first.

Its far from a must honestly.. iam makeing 350whp with 272 cams on 93 pump on a turbo trix custom reflash my head isnt lifting at all. I have had this tune for 10,000 miles with plenty of highway pulls and track runs . If your running a bigger turbo it is a must other wise leave the stock head studs in. People that change the studs are doing it for safety mostly but now people are getting leaks in the back of motor where the head meets the block.. If you must put in head studs get them put in the right way..


If for some reason you are getting tuned for C16 race gas or useing alky then i would put in the arp studs.. if your just getting tuned for pump leave the stock ones in.

I've been running 21 psi for 40k+ miles.

Stock head bolts. No lifting yet.

$100 for parts. But labor is a lot more if you want it done right.

i installed arp's properly had have had a headgasket leak for 10k miles......... i highly recomend NOT using them

RPM plus HP is what stretches the bolts.

Boost causes it cuz of the HP

High sustained boost cylinder pressures causes the head bolts to stretch not rpm's.

You're probably talking about rod bolts.

22-23psi for 50k miles on stock head studs, no probs. If your lifting head studs at 23psi there is another problem.

DEFINITELY NOT a must.

I can see how that * will cause it but what I dont see is how an extra 30 or so pounds of force (boost) can cause a bolt to stretch.

Does the extra amt of O2 seen under boost make a more brutal combustion on the bolts? If so will the use of methanol inj cool the system enough to compensate for the extreem pressures?

Didn't mean to hijack with questions but I'm at this point with my car and concerned

since we are talking about this im putting in a gt30r kit with 280's as we speak and i have studs but i wasnt going to put them in b/c i heard i didnt need them and also if they are not done perfect then they will leak. what do you guys think. i will be running around 22-23 on 92 and 25-26 on 100.

Knock is much more likely to stretch a stock bolt, and all that takes is a bad tank of gas no matter how good your "tune" is In my humble opinion the stock stretchy bolts are just too much of a liability. Run the stockers as long as you want, just be prepared to upgrade them when they go. Some people have better luck than others. I was running 20-23 psi on the street for ~9 months with no trouble, then the HG went. When I went to pull the head the two bolts on the tranny end of the block were finger tight. Easy fix, but it took a long time to get all the oil out of the cooling system. Something I would rather have prevented while I could. Stretchy bolts suck. ARPs have never let me down, on this car or on the DSMs. YMMV. I put a good bit of info, some of which I had to learn the hard way, on this page on my site.
