To coat, or not to coat.... the test pipe?!

I've been thinking about putting my UR test pipe on to see if I notice a difference with my flashed IX... right now I have a Helix HFC mated to a Skunk 3" catback. Anyways, my downpipe is already coated by Performance Coatings and I love it... So I was thinking about getting the test pipe coated also but then I got to thinking.... wouldn't you want the test pipe or cat area to get hot, to burn up all excess gas? Or am I thinking about it all wrong, if I'm swapping my cat out for a test pipe, coating it will just make the gases move faster true and who cares about not burning up unused fuel?? I guess I'd just like know if some others think it would be worthwhile to coat the test pipe as everyone does with headers, o2, downpipes, etc.

That would be a complete waste of money. I actually think coating the DP is too but thats just me. Performance Coatings is is the best, they did all my coating!

You don't need to coat the exhaust parts after the o2.

the only good reason to coat a downpipe would be to keep heat away from the tranny and oil pan. It cant hurt to coat the TP. It would keep it from rusting I suppose.

The only reason to insulate beyond DP is if your running a 2.5" catback or something to keep the hot air flowing through less diameter. At 3" cat back will be good without insulation

Keep in mind if you do insulate your whole system the gases will be much hotter at the tail (esp after heat soak) so the bumber might melt

Clay,

Have you tested coating vs. non-coating exhaust parts on the EVO? I know most of the professional driving 911's have completely coated exhausts, but they are short in comparison to the EVO and completely contained within the engine bay.

Maybe we could get someone to do a before and after test (dyno, temps, emissions, etc.)....

I would say the good reason not to do it is because it will absolutely nothing for you whatsoever and therefore be a complete waste of money. As far as burning up excess gasses or whatever, a test pipe will not do this. As far as heat is concerned, the tp is away from anything that would be effected by heat and hinder performance. Save the 40 bucks, thats a tank of gas

don't bother. post turbo heat is not critical. only consider dp cuz of the oil pan... but if you get a heat blanket or shield or wrap it's just as good.

Stainless steel doesnt rust, and I dont think anyone even sells a mild steel test pipe.
