Get the car, pay it off, save $27,000 extra and do a stroker with GT42R setup. That is what it costs.

Guys, the key word is reliable here. None of those setups will be reliable and long lasting. They are awesome setups dont get me wrong but I think its overboard for what he is asking. He wants a quick reliable setup at least thats what I read from the op.

You can have any 2 of these 3, but never all 3.

- Fast
- Reliable
- Cheap

Think about it.

Well I guess it would have to depend on his definition of fast or reliable.

However, he could have a fast and reliable car IMHO with a built stroker block, and all the supporting bolt ons for just around the 7grand range. Of course keep the stock fmic and turbo. However, the bolt ons he decides to go with is his choice ultimately.

If he didnt say reliable I would have never mentioned the stroker because he could put all the supporting mods on and boost it all the way up and the block would be left to handle all that increase in power and may not be reliable key words here are "may not."

So I guess it is going to be all opinion here but I guess thats all we have to go by. just my .02

A stroker motor with a 35r or less is pretty much the ultimate way to go as far as a street machine. With my current setup i make 22 psi by around 4000-4200 rpms with more tuning to go and drivabilty is awesome. Before i installed my 3065 i had a 20g which was the fastest spooling turbo i've seen yet with a stroker, it almost spooled to fast but the power was lacking up top. 4500-5000 will not do the job for a built and installed motor. You can have Fast and Reliabilty but its not ever going to be cheap!

FYI turbo lag is over rated...

The best turbo if your going to autocross the car varies by class, if its A Stock run a TME or a 20g variant, if its a mod class I would go with a 30R or a gt28 of sorts, new turboed cars can autocross better than people think, in all seriousness how much time do you spend below 4k in an autocross?

I would recommend getting a new 06 and starting with a TBE (turbo back exhaust), MBC ?, Cams (more to be released shortly) & head studs, Fuel Pump, Alky, and Flash / ECU tune. I believe with that setup you will be able to out run almost anything and will have a very reliable fun street car....

ENJOY....

No one here is ripping on you.

What seems simple to you isn't simple to us if we do not have enough information to give you intelligent advice.

It boils down to this:

$4500-5000 may or may not be enough to do what you want, depending upon your starting point.

If you are starting with an EVO that already has substantial upgrades, $4500-5000 becomes more realistic.

IF however you are starting with a stock or relatively stock EVO, $4500-5000 with $600-800 of that invested in a turbo does not get you into stroker territory (not where you'd want to be anyway). $4500-5000 is however enough to make a very strong street performer with the stock 2.0L engine, assuming the upgrades are chosen wisely.

Some road racing guys use the GT30 and a stroker to get a monster torque machine that spools quickly, however, in a lot of cases they run out of breath up top.

So, the best turbo kit for driving and overall stability would be a 20g or a 50trim on a 2.0

The Evo can handle, stock, quite a bit of power as long as care is taken with the tune.

On a 5000 dollar budget, basically you're looking at staged packages 1-4 from AMS, Buschur or the like, then have to cough up more money for the turbo kit and associated installs.

8-10 grand is what it takes to do it properly...so for the most part you have to lower your expectations or come up with a higher budget in the long run.

best of luck.
which 30r powered cars have you seen lose breath up top?

it doesn't matter how much time you spend below 4k, the fact is that WHEN you do and YOU WILL that the climb back up is devastating. therefore i say the biggie turbo will KEEP you under 4k, longer... that's bad.

Sorry, I was arguing on the basis that you NEVER spend time below 4k on most autox courses.
