Then I would sooner believe you cracked the exhaust manifold than believe the machined mating surfaces with a very uniform piece of steel between them torqued properly from the factory are somehow suddenly letting exhaust out, coincidentally at the same time that you replaced your downpipe with a generic one...

I mean I could be wrong, but I'm not

This was taken from another Evo owner's thread. He lost a bolt holding his downpipe to the O2 housing. This is what resulted. Looks pretty similar to your problem.

He is attempting to talk about preventing galvanic corrosion between the head and exhaust manifold.

Yeah but it a metal gasket there. And manifold to the turbo and turbo to the O2 housing.
That's why I was wondering where he got plastic from.

Oh and what are the non-conductive metals??

Tim, please review my "reported post" in relation to zhemel. This is a perfect example of what I am talking about, if you happen to read it. Glad you got to see him in action first-hand...

Ummmmmm look at that car, it's just like I said. The air is getting pulled up from the DP/O2 connection through the center of the exhaust manifold by the venturi effect of the louvered vent on top of the hood. Just because you tightened the bolts doesn't mean your generic downpipe is able to make a seal with the gasket and O2 housing. But doen't listen to me, go back to listening to people who think there are plastic gaskets on the engine, or that you should "tighten the cylinders" (FTW?), or how about the brainiac mechanic who put a stethiscope on your exhaust manifold and proclaimed it was leaking...

Yes there is, it goes [cylinder head] <-> [gasket] <-> [exhaust manifold], which is aluminum, steel, and cast-iron, respectively. Nothing in between but the gasket.

Don't make me photocopy my maintenance manual for you...
