Drill/tap for EGT: Possible after coating?

OK, here's the deal. I am planning on eventually putting an EGT gauge in my car to fill my Gruppe-S panel, but dont have the cash now. I was planning on sending my 10.5 and exhaust manifold to Buschur soon for porting and coating but am worried I wont be able to drill and tap the mani after coating. My question is can I go ahead and get the thing coated now and then drill and tap it later or must I drill/tap now and plug it up? I'd hate to drop the $225 for that and then have it all chip off or something after I try and drill it. Thanks!

OK, thanks! That makes me feel a lot better. To be honest I don't know much about the properties of the different coatings out there. I am going with Buschur so I will have the silver Jet Hot so that's all I need to worry about. Like I said, I just wanted to make sure it wasnt a coating that when it dried became essentially a hard ceramic shell around the metal that if you broke the surface would start to chip and crack up. But if it bonds to the metal surface which now I assume is the case, it makes sense this won't happen. So I'm gonna go ahead and get it done and then drill for EGT next spring. Thanks!!

You'll have no problems drilling it- the coating is very thin and not bulletproof.

Being thin and not bulletproof isn't what he means, he means once he drills and breaks the seal so to speak is it going to promote chipping/cracking of the coating. I'm in the same boat, thinking about getting the mani coated and then tapping it.

If it was me I would drill, tap and then plug, BEFORE coating. That being said, I would call Dave Buschur, or whoever is going to coat the piece and ask them. Maybe it doesn't matter?

agree, doing it before is better as you won't have any voids in the coating.

I emailed BR and PMed Jarrod (sp?) awhile ago about this but never heard back. I'm gonna call before sending anything to them. As for plugging it, I was concerned the expansion and retracting of the mani might get the "plug" stuck in there over time and therefore was hesitant to try this as then I would have to drill the plug out. I dont know. Something about that much heat and 1/8" NPT threads and cast iron makes me thing that might not work with long exposure to high temps.

I'm going to call Buschur or I can email/call Jet hot. That's a good idea, but I'm sure BR can tell me. I just hate to call when I wont be sending the stuff for a few weeks yet so that's why I thought I'd ask on here. Just wanted to hear peoples thoughts on it.

Let us know...I'm in the same boat but I don't have time take my manifold off and send it after I tap so I would have to either tap it once I get it or get a donor manifold and tap it and then send it.

you'll be fine. I can tell you this. If you have a tubular manifold its going to stain, blotch, whatever...I am on the 2nd coat now and it has already begun to transform from nice to rice.

I drilled my coated BR stock/ported mani no problem. I did this with a titanium bit and going slow... no problems at all. If you want you could have BR drill/tap it for you when you get it coated.
