the ecu is different on the 9. It has three plugs instead of four going into it. That may make the harness wired different as well. dont know enough to say for sure.

It's my understanding that the ECU needs to match the harness in the car.

i have an evo8 but my motor is gone. theres a guy that is selling his evo 9 motor and i just wanna know if it fits without any major modifications. I was just going to go with a 2.3 or a 2.4 but then the list of mods are just gonna keep on growing. what do you guys think is my best bet. lets say my buget is 4000. it would of cost me 6400 for the 2.3 installed.

For like $4800-5000 you can get a built motor installed.

6400 was the price i was quoted for from a company in bay area. i dont wana mention any shops but this price included;

-2.3 stroker
-hks cams 272/272
-hks cam gears
-ecu flash
-tune and dyno
-labor for install roughly around 1300 (which is included in the price.)

I just use my orginal head and price also includes 850 core charge for short block.

Only thing is, all i currently have in my evo is hks hi-power, hks rs intake, and blitz bov. Im assuming that the list of performance parts dont stop here after the install. Im going to need other stuff.

the head of the 8 is completely different than the 9

i am not sure that the block is different, but the pistons are different.
below is a pic of an evo 9 block
